Peter Capaldi (The Thick Of It) was announced as the new Doctor Who during a live BBC One show on Sunday evening in a move that’s as much a surprise as it was the expected result. Although he was the bookie’s favourite to take over from the out-going Doctor, Matt Smith, Capaldi’s appointment as the twelfth Time Lord was a well-kept showbiz secret, but equally it was a significant departure from the previous regenerations of The Doctor.
The half hour live show took place at 7pm on Sunday the 4th August 2013 on BBC1 with host Zoe Ball unveiling Capaldi as the new Doctor to a very expectant live studio audience and Tardis loving public. With both the current regeneration, and his soon to be replacements talking on the show, we got to see the two of them giving their take on the future of the series.
Though Matt Smith is still at the helm of the iconic intergalactic, time-travelling police box, Peter Capaldi will be taking over the reigns as of the Christmas Day special, which will see him regenerating into the famous doctor. For Matt Smith fans, it’s not all bad news as he will be presiding over the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, which aired on BBC1 on the 23rd November 2013 in advance of the baton-passing Christmas special. Read our review of The Day of the Doctor for more information.
If you missed the live unveiling of the 12th Doctor Who, you will be able to catch it again on BBC iPlayer for a limited time if you can’t wait until Christmas for a Capaldi based sci-fi fix. For any hardcore Tardis hoppers out there, you’ll probably already know that the upcoming regeneration won’t be his first role in the series, having played the Roman merchant character, Caecilius, in the 2008 episode called The Fires of Pompeii with David Tennant and Katherine Tate.
To get the role, he apparently had to pass a behind closed doors audition at series writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat’s house. To practice, he rehearsed classic Dr Who lines, which should hopefully stand him in good stead to create a brilliant new incarnation for the series. Peter will begin filming for the upcoming series at Roath Lock in Cardiff from early Autumn 2013.
While Peter Capaldi has had many roles in TV, film and theatre, including his stint in The Ladykillers at the Gielgud Theatre, he is arguably best known for his role as the whip mouthed spin doctor, Malcolm Tucker, in Armando Iannucci’s The Thick Of It. To celebrate the new crowning of the bad boy of Number 10 to the role of the good guy of the police public call box, we’ve put together a few potential lines that blur the boundaries between the two roles. Feel free to add your own ideas below (although try to be as judicious as us when it comes to masking your effing and jeffing with * # and ~.
Peter Capaldi’s Malcolm Tucker as the twelfth Dr Who quotes:
“I’m installing a Dalek love swing on Monday by the way. I’m f*#kin jokin ya tw*t.”
“Davros, you have a tiny head. Everyone mentions it. Look you’re turning your head now and I can hardly see it move. Are you turning your head? I can’t tell.”
“Exterminate this, ya f*#kety f*#k wit!”
“Cybermen are so dense, light bends around them.”
“Hey, Metal Mickey knickers!”
“I’m off to wipe my Timelord arse on pictures of Master. I’m getting good at getting his hair to slick back.”
To the Slitheen, “Kiss my balls, you sweaty fat f*#ks!”
