We first started to talk about the potential of what has now been announced as Alpha Papa back in 2010 when Steve Coogan confirmed the production of the Alan Partridge film, however, now that the teaser trailer has been released we know a bit more about the film, not least of all the name. The big news though is that it’ll be out this year, so expect a rejuvenation of Alan Partridge impressions to sweep the nation during the summer… Ahaaaa!
Set for release on the 7th August 2013 through Studio Canal and BBC Films, the actual details for the film are a lot less shrouded in mystery than they have been since the rumours first started to fly. While the teaser trailer doesn’t exactly tell us too much about the full plot we now know that the storyline features a hostage siege at Alan’s North Norfolk Digital radio station with Alan having to take on the role of the negotiator, bringing him the fame that he has long sought to get back..
It’s also going to return Tim Key’s Sidekick Simon character to Alan’s side once again, following his stint during 2011’s Mid Morning Matters, the online shorts featuring Partridge on local digital radio station, North Norfolk Digital. It looks like they’ve put their differences behind them too, considering the fact that Simon was replaced part way through the online series, as well as getting a minor shoeing in Alan’s “autobiography”, I, Partridge.
Armando Iannuci and Peter Baynham also returned with their bags of crayons to help in the writing of the Alan Partridge movie. It’s directed by Declan Downey, who has been getting a lot of press for his efforts to create a Eddie The Eagle film.
There’s going to be a lot of one liners to look forward to with the release of Alpha Papa and some brilliant comic escapades for the radio DJ legend. Although, however you look at it, the panning gut-shot that kicks off the trailer probably won’t be a lone take when the film hits the cinemas in August.
The announcement comes hot on the heals of Steve Coogan’s other film of 2013, The Look of Love, which is set for release this month. Having taken on and beaten Murdoch’s media empire last year, it looks like Alan’s ready to take on the world with Alpha Papa… It’s starting!
