“He’s heating up!” “He’s on fire!!!” Yeah. You know. We all remember the genius of Midway’s 1993 classic NBA Jam, so it’s about time the title made a comeback. With EA continuing to dominate the sports ports, it’s no surprise they’ve decided to bring this one back to life on the Nintendo Wii.
With speculation rife, EA finally confirmed things with the hiring of Mark Turmell (creator of the original) as senior creative director. Together they have promised to recreate the look and feel of the classic 93 incarnation, but with supped-up visuals and Wii controller fun. Imagine lining up a lay-up and then having to do the move yourself with the Wii remote flung high above your head in the living room. There may be a few bust lights before the end of the year.
Development is under way and a summer 2010 release is on the cards. Hopefully, we’ll be able to play as all the old characters, because I used to clean up with the New York Knicks combo of Patrick Ewing and John Starks.
The other exciting possibility is the hope that NBA Jam Wii will also come with online capabilities, allowing us to dunk on punks the world over.
“Boomshakalaka!!!”
