Super bowl weekend has brought with it a slew of TV spots, but the Mulan live action final trailer is the only other new new full trailer to arrive in addition to Fast & Furious 9. In general, it’s the equivalent to the Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker final trailer, which featured much more of the Dark Side of The Force than the previous video, only here it’s the invading wrath of Bori Khan and his witch accomplice Xian Lang.
Jason Scott Lee (Legend The Bruce Lee Story) plays the main antagonist Khan, who is out for revenge for his father at any cost. However, shapeshifting witch Xian Lang looks like the real threat to Mulan with powerful magic in her arsenal, which you get to see more of in the final trailer. She’s played by Gong Li (Memoirs Of A Geisha) who looks very cool in the role.
From the trailer we know she’s able to foresee threats as she’s seen talking to Khan about Mulan, despite his scepticism that a girl could possibly stand in the way of his plans to seize the Imperial City. She can also fire out throwing stars or knives or whatever they are, as well as using her scarf as an extended super powered arm to take out any soldiers that get too close to her.
The other thing to look out for is Mulan transformation from daughter to warrior as she takes her father’s place in the conscription to face the Hun invaders from the north. She’s played by Liu Yifei, who does a pretty good job of making everything believable enough to threat together, leaving more room for the story and characters to develop without thinking about how unlikely the situation is all of the time.
The impression is supported by her skill and training in martial arts, which you can see a little of in scenes throughout the video below. Unlike fellow stars like Donnie Yen and Jet Li, she isn’t a Kung Fu master by any stretch of the imagination, but she looks like she means business from the fleeting fight sequences we get to see in the video.
The scale of the war also comes through well in the final trailer, helped by some stunning architecture shots and scenery, which help to make the film so visually impactful. The charging horses and firing arrows add to the drama of it all, so hopefully the film release lives up to the potential and the legacy of the 1998 Disney animation film and 6th Century Chinese ballad it recreates in live action glory.

Mulan 2020 follows up on a number of other live action films from Disney’s animated catalogue with everything from Dumbo and Beauty And The Beast to The Jungle Book, Aladdin and The Lion King getting remade. While all of them have been fairly well received, none of them have quite recaptured the full magic of the originals, so it’s going to be interesting to see how the next release fares in comparison to its inspiration.
