More London’s The Scoop, Around the World in Eighty Days Free Theatre

More London, The Scoop, Around the World in Eighty DaysApart from the occasional street level domestic, London isn’t necessarily well know for its free theatre, but More London’s The Scoop will be doing what it can for the cause with it’s free performances of Around the World in Eighty Days this summer.

The Scoop is an 800 seater outdoor amphitheatre down on the banks of the River Thames, close to London Bridge underground station. The free performances of Around the World in Eighty Days is a part of a programme of free events at the venue throughout the summer.

The classic Jules Verne novel, written back in the 1870s, has been adapted for the stage by the theatre company, The Steam Industry. The free theatre shows will be performed every Thursday to Sunday at 18:00 from the 4th August to the 4th September 2011.

Following the exploits of Phileas Fogg as he attempts to win a £20,000 wager to travel around the world in 80 days or less, the story is a whirlwind tour of the globe. With his new French valet, Passepartout, in tow, Phileas Fog’s takes his calm and exacting countenance on the beast of a journey, which sees him rescuing Aouda in India, dodging the arrest warrants of Inspector Fix and getting all confused about time.

If you’ve ever read the book or seen the amazing 80s cartoon Around the World with Willy Fog you’ll probably be as excited about The Scoop’s free shows. The performances of Around the World in Eighty Days will be accompanied by later 20:00 shows of Bertold Brecht’s The Mother.
