It’s been a while since we had a good sci-fi disaster movie on in cinemas, but with the Moonfall UK release date sneaking up on everyone we’re about to get a new addition. To bring you up to speed on the film, here’s everything you need to know about it, including the latest on the age rating in our parents guide below, along with the story, cast and our runtime estimate.
The film is the latest work from Geran sci-fi master, Roland Emmerich, whose back catalogue includes Universal Soldier, Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla (1998), The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012. For his latest entry, which he has written, directed and produced, an unexplained force kicks the moon out of it’s orbit and sends it on a collision course with the Earth.
AdvertisementWith the lives of the entire planet hanging in the balance, NASA exec and one-time astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) comes up with a plan to save everyone. However, she struggles to get the power that be to buy into her plan, so she has to go rogue with a former space colleague and conspiracy theorist. The problem is that there’s more to the moon’s fall than meets the eye.
Cast
In addition to Halle Berry (John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum) in the lead role as Jo Fowler, the Moonfall cast also includes Patrick Wilson (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) as her fellow former astronaut, and John Bradley (Samwell Tarley in Game of Thrones) as the dude with the crazy conspiracy theory. The film also stars Michael Peña (Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) and Donald Sutherland (Ad Astra).
Moonfall UK release date
AdvertisementAt the moment, the Moonfall UK release date is a little up in the air, but it’s provisionally down to come out on the 4th February 2022. This is its official release date in the US and Canada, so there could be a little movement in terms of the UK release as we get a little closer to the big screen debut.
If it does come out at the start of February 2022, it will compete for box office sales with Sing 2, which arrives a week earlier, The Black Phone, which is out on the same weekend, and Death on the Nile a week later. However, all of them are very different beasts to the sci-fi spectacular, so it should be able to calve its own place in the box office top ten. There hasn’t been much in the way of publicity or promotion for the film as of yet, but we expect it to step things up to lunar proportions in the New Year.
AdvertisementWith the February 2022 release window, is should go on to come out on DVD and Blu-ray around June 2022, so it’ll be an early summer for its home entertainment debut.

Age rating and parents guide
The official Moonfall age rating in the UK will be confirmed by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) a couple of weeks ahead of the release date and it’s a similar similar story in the US, but there’s plenty to go on before then. For a starter, we can look at Roland Emmerich’s previous disaster movies. With the exception of Godzilla, which was a PG, the rest all picked up a 12 certification, and looking at the trailer, it’s a good posibility for Moonfall.

In terms of our parents guide, there’s clearly going to be moderate threat throughout the majority of the film, but this might creep up in intensity towards the end of the film as the truth behind the moon comes to light. The setting will mostly be out in space with a good amount of peril, so a good comparison for parents would be Gravity or Ad Astra.
We’ll update you with more details on the thriller as they get confirmed. You can also check out our movie news section to keep tabs on the latest upcoming films, or visit the Moonfall website at https://moonfall.movie/.
Runtime
As with the age rating, the runtime for Moonfall hasn’t been confirmed as of yet, but this kind of sci-fi film is usually around the 2 hour mark. However, 2012 was 2 and a half hours, so there’s clearly the potential for it to be an even longer film.
