Story synopsis details
As expected, II will see them all teaming up with the young Gru as he vies for credibility in the nefarious world of international super villains when a spot becomes available on the Vicious 6 supervillain league. However, you can see in trailer 1 that things don’t exactly start off all that well as he gets laughed at as soon as he comes face to face with the underworld powers that be.
The film is set a long time before Despicable Me, following on from Minions, which took place towards the end of the 1960s, so Gru is still just a kid, which is why the rest of the supervillains are less than welcoming. However, as usual, he’s actually pretty well equipped to deal with them, especially with the help of Stuart, Kevin, Bob and the rest of the yellow army, who have become his loyal followers as the 1970s get underway.
When Gru gets laughed out of the Vicious 6 interview, he’s told to do something really despicable before coming back again, but instead of slinking away in a sulk he manages to steal their jewel emblem and make a run for it. Inevitably, the supervillain council set off after him and the Minions straight away, which results in a huge madcap chase through the city with Gru and the majority of the gang distracting the villains while new addition Otto is tasked with the job of getting the stone back to the lair.
While everyone makes it back OK, Gru’s troubles continue when he finds out that Otto has swapped the stone for a pet rock with googly eyes. This leaves them at an impasse with the Vicious 6 still out for their blood and no stone as leverage to get them to accept Gru into their ranks.
Cue the music and the team have got yet another mammoth double task ahead of them in Minions 2. There’s the hunt to get the stone back from the birthday girl that Otto swapped it with, but you can see from the end of the trailer that the Vicious 6 aren’t planning to just wait around for Gru to bring it back to them, so there’s bound to be a number of attacks to fend off along the way.
According to the details in the description for trailer 1, the reason the spot opened up on the Vicious 6 is because the former leader, Wild Knuckles, was ousted by the rest of the group. It also says that when things go badly for Gru he ends up turning to Wild Knuckles for help, and if every other Despicable Me/Minions films are anything to go by then there’s bound to be a twist somewhere along the line.
Trailer 1 voice cast
Gru may well be a whole lot younger as he rises to supervillain stature in the film, but Steve Carell is still voicing the character for the Minions sequel, having done a similar job for Gru’s end film appearance in the 2015 spin-off opener. Pierre Coffin is also back playing all of the Minions, including Otto.
You don’t really hear all that much from the rest of the characters, with the exception of new leader of the Vicious 6, Belle Bottom, who is played by Taraji P. Henson, as she tells Gru to do something really evil to impress her. However, the rest of her crew include Jean-Claude Van Damme as Jean Clawed, Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck, Dolph Lundgren as Svengeance and Danny Trejo as Stronghold.
You don’t see them in the trailer, but the cast also includes Russell Brand as a young Dr. Nefario, Julie Andrews as Gru’s mum Marlena, Alan Arkin as Wild Knuckles and Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow.
