New Yorkers, MGMT, will be hitting UK shores again this summer and this time around they’ll be bringing Guards along with them for the psychedelic oracular spectacular celebration. The news comes hot on the heels of the brilliant announcement that they will also be releasing their self titled third studio album later this year.
Guards are the 60s psych pop outfit made up of Richie James Follin (brother of Cults’ Madeline Follin), Loren Ted Humphrey, and Kaylie Church. They also hail from the big apple and put out their own debut album, In Guards We Trust, earlier in the year. You can listen to their brilliant single, Ready To Go, in our review page. They’re about to release their new single, ‘I Know It’s You’ on the 8th July 2013.
The combo will be playing a short UK tour following a series of European gigs that kicks off in Cologne on the 26th September and seeing them pick off the likes of Stockholm, Berlin, Vienna, Zurich and Paris before gracing such exotic UK cities as Wolverhampton and Glasgow.
Although, in all honesty, we reckon the Civic Hall in Wolves will be one of the best places to see MGMT on the tour. The place is massive and they do a mean can of Red Stripe, plus the after party, ingeniously called Blast Off, is literally one of the best indie discos in the world.
MGMT and Guards UK tour dates:
Sat 12th Oct – Glasgow – ABC1
Sun 13th Oct – Wolverhampton – Civic
Mon 14th Oct – Manchester – Apollo
Wed 16th Oct – London – Forum
Sat 19th Oct – Dublin – Olympia
The MGMT album is set to hit the shelves on the 17th September 2013. It follows on from their 2008 hit packed debut, Oracular Spectacular, and their brilliant 2010 experimental psych second inning, Congratulations. According to the press release, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser continue to push to expand the boundaries of modern pop on MGMT, so hopefully we’ll get a combination of the best elements of the previous two albums with their upcoming release.
Their first offering from the album, Alien Days, was released as a limited edition cassette single for this year’s Record Store Day. It’s a great development of the psych genius that made up Congratulations, with vast overlays of experimental synth, vocals and fuzz. It’s a fun and playful pop track in parts, but equally it’s addictive and wildly out of nowhere. ‘mazin’! Take a listen for yourself below:
