Dates, details and dilemmas.
When coming up with a new subject for a stand up comedy tour, it must be tough to decide on the right topic. You probably want something big enough to cover the duration of the tour, but not so serious that the jokes get lost. With this dilemma in mind, Mark Watson has centred his 2010 tour around the concept of feeling important in a world jam packed with other people.
From my experience people seem to do quite well in terms of a sense of their own importance – the streets are filled with people that think that the world revolves on its massive axis for the sole joy of their stupid pie-faced existence – but then there’s a big difference between people who think that they’re important and people that are determined to make an impact. However, there’s an even bigger difference between the latter and those that actually make a good dent in the way things are.
With all of this deep dark matter to talk about, it’s sort of hard to see where Mark is going to find the room to make it all funny, but having seen his work on Mock the Week, Have I Got News for You and Never Mind the Buzzcocks I reckon he just might pull it all off. With 39 shows running between October 2010 and February 2010, he’s definitely setting his bar high and wide, but just how important it’ll all be, I just don’t know.
