The Super Mario Bros Movie runtime is pretty much as you’d expect for an Illumination animated feature, and you can check out the details below to see how long the movie is. It delivers big on expectations with a length that works well and builds on the success of the Sonic movies, so we might be in the process of seeing a new fight between the two characters.

Introduction
If you look back on the 90s Mario and Sonic were the biggest names in gaming, leading the Nintendo and Sega front-line in the console war. Things have changes now with Sega focusing only on software, but it was first to land well on the big screen, so we might get a movie war at some time in the future.
AdvertisementSonic 2 has already teased another sequel featuring Shadow, so if Nintendo and Illumination follow things up with a sequel to the Super Mario Bros Movie then there’s at least an outside chance they could go toe-to-toe. It’s a pipe dream without mushroom for getting the flag, but hey, we’re eternal optimists. For now, here’s everything you need to know about how long the movie is, including the length of time you need to stay to catch the post credits reveal scene.

Mario Movie runtime
The Super Mario Bros Movie runtime was confirmed with the North America cinema listings and it’s 92-minutes long, which is about the average for animated films. This is the same in the UK and for anyone looking for a math cheat it works out as 1 hour and 32 minutes long.
As ever, that doesn’t include the trailers and adverts before the film, so you might want to factor in another 20-minutes if you’re looking to catch it all. At the same time, there are two credits scene, so you need to add on a little for that as well.

This doesn’t come to much more in terms of the overall runtime, but credits aren’t usually counted in the notes on how long a film is. If you factor in a couple more minutes for this you probably won’t be disappointed. You can find out more about the credits scenes with the link below.
With the sequel teased, the question is whether or not it’ll just be a return for Bowser for a second time, like Doctor Robotnik in the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie. There are other villains in the Super Mario Bros. gaming series, so it’s possible that we might see someone like Bowser Jr. wading into the action during the credits scene.
Other contenders include Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2 and then you’ve got the likes of Wario and Paper Mario’s King Olly or Luigi’s Mansion’s King Boo. Sadly, the credits scene doesn’t tease a spin off into Luigi’s Mansion, which would have been very cool, but you can’t win them all.
They still have it as an option, along with a host of others for the series going forward. It was interesting to see the teaser in the post credits scene and it points to more fun still to come with Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 highly anticipated already.

How long will the special features and extras be for home media?
AdvertisementDetails for the home entertainment release for the Mario Movie are incredibly thin on the ground. We’ll have to wait a while after the cinema run to find out more, but if it’s as big on the box office then it could be a fairly long batch of special features and extras to bundle with the Blu-ray, 4K and possibly digital versions.
It would be great to see the cast in action doing their voice recording and details on the animation process always works well. Disney has kind of cornered the market on this kind of thing, so it would be good to see Illumination joining the party.

How does the new Mario Movie compare to the length of the 1993 live-action flick?
It’s fair to sat that the 2023 Mario Movie is a much better film than the 1993 live-action adaptation. We’ll always have a soft spot for the film, but it gets a lot of flack. It’s only ten minutes longer than the Illumination animation, so there’s not much in it.
AdvertisementHowever, both of them have some pretty funny sequences, although for the ’93 film not all of them are intentional. It’s still worth checking out for a laugh, but don’t blame us if you react as badly as Josh Rogan did. It made him go bananas, so…
They’ve also both got some great songs with the animated Mario Movie including hits like Take On Me by A-ha, No Sleep Till Brooklyn by The Beastie Boys, Thunderstruck by AC-DC and Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra. The live action film was fronted by the brilliant Almost Unreal by Roxette and featured Walk the Dinosaur by Was (Not Was), Breakpoint by Megadeth and Love is the Drug by Divinyls (originally by Roxy Music).
