If you’re about to go to see the video game adaptation or you’ve just watched it and want to know if it’s worth waiting around, here’s everything you need to know about the Super Mario Movie post credits scene. It’s a relatively short film, so it’s easy to hightail it as the credits start to roll, but if you stick around there are two short scenes to look forward to.
For anyone that doesn’t want any spoilers, we’ll start by talking you through when the mid and post credits scenes take place to make sure that you stick around long enough to watch them for yourself. After that we’ll cover what happens in them and what it means for the future of the franchise on the big screen.
How long do you need to wait to see the mid and post credits scenes?
AdvertisementAs mentioned above there are two credits scenes to enjoy at the end of the Super Mario Bros Movie and the first of these takes place pretty early on. To catch it for yourself, you only need to wait until the main cast credits are finished to be able to see it.
You’ll know when it’s about to start, because the credits will fade and the music will change. However, this isn’t the big “reveal” post credits scene, which hints at more Mario films to come in the future now that Nintendo has joined forces with the might of Illumination.

The post credits scene is even shorter than the mid credits number, but it should give you a little taster of what’s to come next. However, to see it you’ll need to stick it out right the way to the end, so this is a couple of minutes later than the first scene.
If you want to get a bit more of an explanation in terms of what this means, or if you missed it, or don’t have time to stick around, you can read the next section to find out more. This will include our theory for the story for the Super Mario Movie 2 as well as some of the details in the rest of the film that you might have missed.
AdvertisementThe film follows a similar trend as in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the Sonic The Hedgehog movies from old school rival Sega. This gives us two credits scenes with one being more fun and the second acting as a teaser for the sequel, which we’re pretty certain to be a foregone conclusion.
If anything, it could well spark a number of films with spin-offs for Donkey King and Toad a real possibility. Illumination is smashing everything out of the park at the moment and the Super Mario Movie builds on the success of Minions 2 and Sing, so this could be huge for both parties.

What happens in the mid and post credits scene in the Super Mario Bros Movie?
The first scene that takes place mid-way through the credits is the lighter of the two with Bowser singing another ode to Princess Peach at his piano. This time it has more of a bitter tone with references to the interference of Mario, Donkey Kong and Toad.
AdvertisementNot long after he sings a couple of bars, he’s interrupted by a Toad guard and told to quieten down. The camera pans back to reveal that he’s still small and still imprisoned for his crimes against the Mushroom Kingdom.
On the face of things, you might think that this doesn’t tell us much about the sequel, but if we assume that things continue from this point on, you could argue that it means that the Super Mario Movie 2 will introduce another villain into the mix. Usually, when the Koopa King is out of action it’s his son Bowser Jr. that takes up the fight and for us this scene makes it a contender.

Other final bosses we’ve had in Mario games of the past have included Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2, King Boo in the Luigi’s Mansion films and Wario. All of these could be in the mix and the fact that we saw King Boo in the front row of the wedding ceremony adds to the possibility of him returning in the second movie.
The mid-credits scene was then followed by the post credits reveal, which was a short shot of a Yoshi egg in a sewer with a green pipe. You might be a bit “meh, so what” about this with a group of Yoshis seen earlier on in the film, but the difference here is the location.
AdvertisementA heard of Yoshis on the loose in the Mushroom Kingdom probably aren’t all that remarkable, but what sets this one apart is that it appears to have hatched in the bowels of Brooklyn. This gives the second Super Mario Movie a number of options that it could go down ranging from a rescue attempt to it causing havoc back home and even supersizing to parody King Kong.
Either way you look at it, the Yoshi egg is a pretty good sign that its arrival in New York is going to be a big part of the plot for the sequel. The other thing to consider is that it could well be a special type of Yoshi that holds the key to defeating the new villain, so maybe it’s even more unusual than we realize.
We only see the egg in the post credits scene and while the color of the egg is usually a good indicator of the color and type of the Yoshi inside, there could be more to this than meets the eye. At the moment this is all just theory and we’ll probably have to wait some time to find out more, but it’s already fun speculating about the next Super Mario Movie.
