It’s time to get set for the most exciting animated film of 2022 with the Lightyear UK release date fully confirmed and the teaser trailer out. To add to the build-up, here’s everything you need to know about the film, including the latest on the age rating in our guide section below, plus the story synopsis, cast and our runtime estimate.
It looks set to be a very clever spinoff from the Toy Story series, taking things on a tangent with the inspiration for the Buzz Lightyear action figure. The man of the same name is a space explorer of heroic proportions and the film will follow along with his story as he trains for the biggest mission of his life.
AdvertisementIt’s essentially, the origin story for the character, but arguably the most unusual origin story in animated movie history outside of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As ever, it’s a Disney Pixar production and looks set to be yet another gem in their incredible catalogue of films. It also leaves things open for a Woody origin story too at some time in the not too distant infinity and beyond.
Cast
The cast list for Lightyear is led by Chris Evans (Avengers: Endgame) of Captain America fame, who takes up the mantle of Buzz in the film, which means that Tim Allen isn’t in the frame on this one. We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed for a 5th entry to the main series to get “more power” back in the mix.
AdvertisementThe cast also includes Keke Palmer as Junior Zap Patrol’s Izzy Hawthorne, Taika Waititi as Mo Morrison and Dale Soules as Darby Steel. James Brolin (Josh’s dad) plays Emperor Zurg. There’s also Mary McDonald-Lewis as Buzz’s computer I.V.A.N., Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Commander Burnside, Efren Ramirez as Diaz and Keira Hairston as a young Izzy.
Lightyear UK release date
The good news is that the Lightyear UK release date has now been confirmed for the 17th June 2022, so we’ll get to see it all in action as summer starts to hot up. It’ll be out on the same date in the US and Canada, so there shouldn’t be too much story detail to avoid online unless there’s a last minute date change, which seems highly unlikely.
There’s just a few days to go for the film release, and it has very little new competition coming out on the same date. However, it’s actually got a lot of competition with Jurassic World Dominion, which arrived in cinemas a week earlier, as well as the residual impact of the Bob’s Burger Movie and Top Gun Maverick.
AdvertisementThe June 2022 cinematic release was followed by Lightyear being scheduled for DVD, Blu-ray and digital in August 2022, which means that it’s sure to be on a lot of Christmas home entertainment wish lists alongside Jurassic World Dominion and Fantastic Beasts 3. Although, it will also stream on Disney+ on the 3rd August 2022.

Age rating and parents guide
The Lightyear UK age rating has been given its certification by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), which awarded the film a PG. It’s a similar story for the Motion Picture Associated in the US. This confirms what we could take from the rating for previous Toy Story films with the first film picking up a PG and then the rest of films were U for Universal.
In terms of the parents guide notes, the notes include mild threat and violence, but this is very similar to the Toy Story franchise. Things are definitely going to get tense for Buzz out in space and there’s always an element of sadness, loss or an emotional journey with Pixar Films, which is worth bearing in mind for parents.
We’ll update you with more details on the animated film as they get confirmed. You can also check out our movie news section to keep tabs on the latest upcoming film release dates, age rating details and parents guide notes, or visit the Disney Pixar website at https://www.pixar.com/.
Runtime
As with the age rating, the Lightyear runtime was confirmed as we got nearer to the release date and it’ll be 1 hour and 50 minutes long. If you look at the Toy Story franchise the average is a little over the 1 hour and 30 minutes mark, so its not too far off.
