Life In Colour theme song and music has a lot to live up to

BBC 2 Life In Colour theme

The BBC has recently announced new David Attenborough nature series, Life In Colour, but with the theme song and music of previous shows it has a lot to live up to. The upcoming programme isn’t set to air until early 2021, so we won’t get to hear anything for a while, but with the likes of Blue Planet and Frozen Planet in the back catalogue there’s a lot of great music that has gone before it.

The BBC 2 production is a collaboration between Bristol-based Humble Bee Films and Sydney-based SeaLight Pictures following on from their previous success with Sir David Attenborough. Humble Bee has worked with the nature legend on four series of Attenborough’s Natural Curiosities and on BBC One special Attenborough And The Giant Elephant, so it should another incredible production.

Their music scores may not have been quite as big and impressive as the Planet series, but they’re still pretty memorable, setting things up well and tying into the focus of the documentaries. The mystery element really came through in the Natural Curiosities theme tune, which was a classical piano peace, and then the title track for Attenborough And The Giant Elephant is all brass with horns and trumpet harmonies to go with the pachyderm portrait.

What to expect from the theme song and music

Nature shows in general are normally accompanied by a classical theme tune and music, either featuring a full orchestra or a single instrument like the piano or kazoo. Okay, so maybe not the kazoo, but you get the idea and the Life In Colour theme is sure to be the same, or at least very similar.

However, both Natural Curiosities and The Giant Elephant were more specific rather than featuring an entire orchestra, so that should be the case again with the latest production from Humble Bee Films, even with the addition of SeaLight Pictures. If you carry that through in terms of the light-based theme, then we might be looking at either a soft piano melody or maybe even some light wind instruments like the flute, or possibly the harp. We’ll discuss in more detail after the opening episode airs.

More details for Life In Colour

Life In Colour will see David Attenborough exploring the way animals use colour to their advantage in all manor of different environments around the world. Colour obviously plays a huge part in the lives of all animals, whether it’s the camouflage that prey use to stay alive or the special eyesight abilities predators have to stalk their prey.

The show will go beyond the visible spectrum to show how some species have evolved to take advantage of light frequencies that are outside of the human eye’s range. It’ll use purpose built cameras to bring to life the sight of animals that go beyond the norm to find food or avoid being eaten themselves.

Filming has taken place in a number of locations around the world to get the footage, but environments in Australia have made for particularly good subject matter for the series. The Life In Colour air date hasn’t been confirmed as of yet, but it will arrive on BBC 2 early in 2021. It’s also being broadcast worldwide by Netflix and in Australia by Channel 9, so the series, it’s theme tune and music are going to be an international delight when they arrive next year.
