Let’s Be Cops

Let's Be CopsIf your looking for a fairly silly comedy that’s good for a few laughs, you might want to take a look at the trailer below for Let’s Be Cops, as it’s got inane fun written all over it. Teaming up Jake Johnson (21 Jump Street) and Damon Wayams, Jr (The Other Guys, Big Hero 6) outside of their usual New Girl roles as Nick and Coach, it’s far from being a big name release, but if the trailer below wasn’t enough to persuade us of the comedy merits of the film, the film itself managed to complete the job with some pretty silly situations and funny comedy moment.

Release date

The UK and US cinema release date for the film was on the 16th August 2014 and while we didn’t expect it to be a massive blockbuster, the recent box office success of 22 Jump Street provided a big indication that there was more than enough audience potential for it to go on. This turned out to be the case for Let’s Be Cops too with more than enough of a comedy loving crowd to help lift Johnson and Wayams’ cinematic credentials a little in the process. It went on to get a DVD, Blu-ray and digital download release on the 26th December 2014 in the UK and the 11th November 2014 in the US.

Storyline

The story is pretty daft, but it does provide a lot of opportunities for good laughs as best friends, Ryan and Justin (Johnson and Wayams) discover that pretending to be cops has a number of perks following an epic fancy dress party. When they keep up the pretense a little longer than they’d set out to they find themselves pulled into the more negative aspects of the law, with criminals and dodgy detectives vying for their scalps.

However, with the promise of smoking hot girls, hero status and the power of the badge they decide to take the rough with the smooth and take on the baddies to get the goodies. It doesn’t necessarily always go to plan, but just like Pineapple Express, the guys will have a pretty good chance of coming out of it all fine and dandy in the end.

Cast

In addition to Johnson and Wayams, the cast also includes James D’Arcy (Cloud Atlas) as Mossi Kasic the crime boss they find themselves up against, along with Andy Garcia (The Godfather Part III, Hero, Ocean’s Eleven) as his nasty detective associate. There’s also a starring role for newcomer, Nina Debrov, from The Vampire Diaries, as Justin’s love interest Josie, and seasoned comedy veteran Rob Riggle (The Internship) playing Officer Segars.

Production

Let’s Be Cops was directed by another relative newcomer Luke Greenfield, who also produced the movie along with Simon Kinberg (X-Men Days Of Future Past) and wrote it with Nicholas Thomas.

Review

Like a cross between Wedding Crashers and the 21 Jump Street film, it’s easily become a decent, no brain cells required summer comedy that’s just as much about the girls as it is about the jokes. It’s definitely got more than a few traces of being a bloke flick, but it left a fair few of us leaving the cinema with smiles on our faces, which can’t be a bad thing.
