In 2012 former The Loves lead singer Simon Love kick started his homage to lingerie with short-lived, but impressive boy girl duet group, Knickers. Having played a number of gigs in and around London, they eventually pulled things together enough to record some of their new tracks and they started to get a good amount of air play on BBC 6 Music. This led on to the release of their first material in EP #1, which became available for digital download on the 21st May 2012.
The EP was also released on limited edition 7″ vinyl, following on a little later than the digital download on the 4th June. If you were lucky enough to get your hands on one of these you’ll probably be counting it as one of your precious treasure trove collectors items already.
The video for My Baby’s Just A Baby (But I Love Him So) is genius – directed by Matthew Oaten & Laura Clarke and starring Matthew A Kaufman – it features all of the band, although lead singer Simon, bass player Dan and drummer Johnny look pretty stiff at times (not in a weird way, they’re just meant to be brown bread, which is Cockeney rahyming slang for le deceased). The EP also includes Are You Ready Girl?, which is a cover of the Dave Davies solo song, and there’s co-vocals from Comet Gain’s David Feck on A Thousand Ways.
With “French girl wanted” Sarah’s smoky vocals and Simon’s blitzkrieg guitar, the EP is a good introduction to the London band’s flash pan material. If you haven’t seen them live yet, you’ve missed the boat, which is a pity because they put on a pretty cool show, but you can still listen to some of their finest work in the four tracks that were laid down on EP #1.
The band was the transition of The Loves front man, Simon Love, but only lasted until the long, cold winter of 2012/13 when he started to turn his attention to the path of the lone wolf, howling into the London night like the Crack Fox on speed. Anyway, enough of the poetic license, and to cut a long story short, Simon went on to go solo in the purple haze of the wild spring of 2013, but it wasn’t until 2015 that the fruits of his monolithic efforts bore fruit with new album, It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time.
