Will Smith is a serious contender for an Academy Award this time around and with the King Richard UK release date fast approaching (details below), here’s everything you need to know about the film, including the age rating latest and our parents guide. We’ll also cover the story synopsis, cast and estimated runtime for the biographical drama, so you can be ready for the tour de force ace when it gets served up in 2021.
The real life story is that of a black family striving to make strides from their Compton neighbourhood in a bid to break into the world of professional tennis in the face doubters. Led by their father and mother, Richard and Oracene, the two daughters work tirelessly to realise their dream of playing competitive tennis.
AdvertisementObviously, we now know the daughters pretty well as the tennis greats, Venus and Serena Williams, but at the time they had a pretty insurmountable mountain to climb. It looks set to be an inspiring story of determination in the face of adversity, especially for anyone unlucky enough to have a more challenging start in life than is the norm. Hopefully, Oracene features as much as the King in the title to balance out the film to proportions akin to reality.
Cast
The King Richard cast features Will Smith in the lead role as Richard Williams, alongside Aunjanue Ellis (The Help) as his then wife Oracene. The famous sisters are played by newcomers Demi Singleton as Serena and Saniyya Sydney as Venus. The cast also includes Jon Burnthal (The Many Saints of Newark) as tennis coach Rick Macci, who also worked with Andy Roddick, Jennifer Capriati and Maria Sharapova.
King Richard UK release date
AdvertisementThe 2021 biography has been confirmed for a UK release date of Friday the 19th November following a reschedule from its initial slate back in November 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. King Richard will be coming out in the US and Canada on the same date and with a matter of months until the 94th Academy Awards in March 2022, it’s definitely well placed to be up for a number of nominations.
However, the award season results won’t be out in time to impact it’s success at the UK box office and with Ghostbusters: Afterlife out a day before it, there doesn’t seem like much chance of it taking the number 1 spot. It’ll also have Joaquin Phoenix drama, C’mon, C’mon to contend with, which has a release date of the 19th as well, so the story faces a little adversity on the big screen.
AdvertisementWith the November 2021 release, it should then be come out on DVD, Blu-ray and digital in the UK around March 2022, which will be very close to the Academy Awards, so it could have a big impact on sales for the home entertainment release.
There are no details as of yet in terms of when it will stream in Britain though, despite it arriving on HBO Max in the US.

Age rating and parents guide
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has announce the UK age rating for the sports biography with the UK release date just around the corner. It has been given a 12A certification (PG-13 in the US), with similarities to films like The Blind Side where a 12 is the norm. King Richard could have gone a different way and aimed for a lower age rating with the likes of Chariots of Fire, Race, Queen of Katwe and Remember the Titans as good examples, but it has clearly taken a more challenging line.
In terms of parents guide notes, the trailer focuses on the inspirational story of belief, effort and having a good plan, which Hannibal and Mr. T would definitely be fans of. However, the certification notes include moderate violence, threat, racism and infrequent strong language.
We’ll update you with more details on the film as they get confirmed. You can also check out our movie news section to keep tabs on the latest upcoming films, or visit the official website at https://www.kingrichardfilm.net/.
Runtime
The runtime for King Richard clocks in at a chunky 2 hours and 18 minutes, which is around the ball park where sports dramas are concerned.
