The PS Vita hasn’t really done a great deal to make waves in terms of hand-held games console supremacy stakes, but with the upcoming release of Killzone Mercenary it’s about to step things up a notch. It’s the second Killzone game to feature on a Sony hand-held console, following on from 2006’s Killzone Liberation on the PSP, and with a trailer and gameplay preview that looks impressive on the supped up graphics of the PS Vita, it could be epic.
As well as the super slick first person shooter gameplay that’s a big part of Killzone games, there’s also a bit more hand to hand combat killing to get involved with that’s as brutal as the sneak cut-throat style of Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater.
Graphics
Graphically, the game looks amazing, with stunning futuristic cityscapes to roam around in and hulking mecha-enemies to blast your way through. It’s backed up by some crazy action by the look of things, based on the mercenary angle of the game, there are no sides, only business opportunities.
Plot
The plot for the game sees you take on the role of Mercenary, Arran Danner, who will do literally anything Killzone related for the sweet sweet smell of loadsa money. He isn’t fussed about sides, agendas, issues or political motivations. All he cares about is getting paid.
It’s set just after the original Killzone, but spans all of the first three games, interweaving the events with his own brand of highly efficient hired help. Switching between missions for both the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance (ISA) and the Helghan forces determined to overthrow them.
Gameplay
In addition to your normal first person shooter controlls, the PS Vita release will feature controls through the touch screen and swipe pad on the back. Sneak up to an unsuspecting threat to the mission and whip out a swipe and you’ll silently kill him with your knife, Metal Gear Solid style.
As well as the single player story mode, Killzone Mercenary will also include options for multi-player online gaming with either 3G or Wifi connections, depending on what you have set up on your Vita.
Release
Developed by Guerilla Games Cambridge exclusively for the PlayStation Vita, it’s a cool looking game with great first person shooter action, a multi-sided adventure and a massive array of weapons, enemies and backdrops to get wrapped up in. Set for release on the 17th September 2013, you’ll have a little while to wait before you get to blast it for cash.
It’s a game that could bring a lot of new fans to the PS Vita too, and who knows, maybe by then there’ll be a price reduction to make it even more universally loved.
