With a long list of epic sci-fi movies wowing audiences in 2014 ranging from the impressive theoretical science of Interstellar to the all-out action comedy genius of The Guardians Of The Galaxy, 2015 has got a lot to live up to and Jupiter Ascending was one of the first in the mix. With stunning special effects and an sprawling space opera adventure story it looks like it’s got the potential to set the bar high for the rest of the year.
Release date
The latest sci-fi offering from The Wachowskis (The Matrix trilogy, Cloud Atlas) took off in early 2015 with a release date of the 6th February, making it one of the first big blockbusters of the year. It was released in 2D, IMAX and 3D, and from the look of the film (you can check out the trailer below to see it in action for yourself) this is one to watch with as much visual impact as possible, so it was definitely one to have watched in 3D or MAX.
If you missed it at the cinema, it’ll be coming to digital download on the 15th June 2015 and DVD and Blu-ray on the 29th June in the UK, with a slightly earlier release date of the 2nd June for North America. It’s got 3D Blu-ray written all over it though if you’ve got the setup with some very impressive sci-fi scenes and special effects.
Storyline
Jupiter Jones lives a pretty dull life on Earth, despite her dream of achieving great things one day, but unbeknownst to her there’s a lot more to her destiny than she could ever have imagined. When she’s saved from certain death by Caine Wise, a genetically engineered hunter who’s been sent to find her, she discovers that she’s a significant player in a galactic war for control over key planets like Earth.
Telling her that her genetic code is that of a royal elite and that she’s the rightful heir to planet Earth, Caine introduces her to an interstellar world of powerful dynasties that see her as a threat to their own supremacy. One of the most ambitious and Machiavellian of these is Balem, who considers himself to be the rightful owner of Earth, so the discovery of Jupiter is met with a threat of monumental proportions, leaving her and her protector with a massive challenge ahead of them just to survive, let alone safeguard the future of the planet.
Cast
Mila Kunis (Black Swan) takes on the role of the newfound potential monarch, Jupiter, with Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher) playing the elfin looking warrior Caine, with the two sharing a few on-screen moments by the look of the trailer. Eddie Redmayne (My Week With Marilyn) tries his hand at being the villain, and looks pretty impressive in the process, playing dynastic megalomaniac Balem Abrasax, while Douglas Booth (Pride And Prejudice And Zombies) plays Titus, Balem’s brother, and Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game, Black Mirror Series 2) plays Kalique, his sister.
Bae Doona and James D’Arcy (Let’s Be Cops) return to work with the Wachowskis following their roles in Cloud Atlas. The cast also includes Sean Bean (Pixels) as Stinger, Caine’s former commander, and there’s a very cool cameo for Terry Gilliam (Brazil, The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus) to look out for too.
Production
Lana and Andy Wachowski have written, directed and produced the movie with Village Roadshow Pictures and their own Anarchos Productions. Michael Giacchino is down as the music lead for the film score and considering his work with Star Trek Into Darkness, Cloverfield and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, we should be getting a pretty impressive score to go along with the impressive visuals you can see in the trailer below.
First impressions
Jupiter Ascending looks like it’s going to be a cool space adventure with a solid cast and production team behind it. The storyline may not be quite as deep thinking as The Wachowski’s previous movies, The Matrix, V For Vendetta and Cloud Atlas, but it does sound like it’s going to play out like the sci-fi rollercaster ride it’s shaping up to be. Eddie Redmayne looks like he’s going to continue with his acting masterclass and put in a very powerful performance as the movie’s villain and we can’t wait to see it all play out with the special effects that already look mesmerising in the trailer.
