Joker tops BAFTA 2020 nominations

Joker tops BAFTA 2020 nominations

There’s definitely something very special about the Joker as a character, because it’s one of the few roles in comic book history to get big nominations during award season. However, Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips’ 2019 psychological thriller adaptation looks set to be the most prolific with 11 nominations in the bag already from the 2020 BAFTAs.

It’s the most nominated film for this year’s ceremony, followed closely by The Irishman and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which both picked up 10 nominations. The winners will be announced on the 2nd February 2020 at the Royal Albert Hall and you can watch all of the fun on BBC One with the evening hosted by Graham Norton.

You can check out more details for the Joker DVD, Blu-ray and digital release at www.tuppencemagazine.co.uk/joker-dvd-release-date-uk, or see the official webpages on the Warner Bros. site at www.warnerbros.com/movies/joker.

Joker BAFTA 2020 nominations

The big nominations for Joker are Best Film, Director for Todd Phillips, Leading Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, Original Score by Hildur Guđnadóttir and Cinematography by Lawrence Sher. It’s also in with a shout for Adapted Screenplay, Casting, Editing, Production Design, Make Up & Hair and Sound, so it could be a good haul for the film.

In addition to The Irishman and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, the big competition will also come from the San Mendes directed World War 1 drama 1917. It has bagged nine nominations and will be up against Joker in the Best Film, Director, Original Score, Conematography, Production Design, Make Up & Hair and Sound and with the film being a British production it could well be Joker’s biggest challenger on the night.

Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit is the fifth most nominated film at the 2020 BAFTAs behind 1917 with six nods. However, two of its nominations are in categories that Joker isn’t in – Best Supporting Actress by Scarlett Johansson and Costume Design – so it’ll be a surprise if it manages to beat it to many, if any of the award wins.

Other big films, like Rocketman, Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker and Judy, haven’t fared as well in terms of BAFTA 2020 nominations, with just four for the Elton John biopic and three each for Rise and Judy. However, Star Wars Episode IX wont be much trouble for Joker as it’s nominations come in Special Visual Effects, Sound and Original Score with just the latter two against the Todd Phillips thriller.

Looking ahead to the BAFTA ceremony in early Feb, Joker is definitely a significant contender for the Best Film, Director, Screenplay and Leading Actor categories, which are among the biggest awards. In fact, it’s in with a shout for each and every nomination that it has been given, so it’s going to be interesting to see how it all pans out on the night.

It could also be an early indicator for how well all of the big films over the last year might do at the Academy Awards ceremony on February 9th 2020. Like the BAFTAs, the Oscars announce nominations much earlier than the day of the awards ceremony and this year they’ll be confirmed on Monday 13th January.

We’re expecting a similar trend to the BAFTAs with Joker picking up the lions share of the nominations followed by The Irishman, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, 1917 and Jojo Rabbit. Judy could also do a little better in the US awards night than at the BAFTAs, but Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker will again only stand a chance of nominations for effects, sound and score.

It’s an incredible achievement for Joker, irrespective of how many awards it goes on to actually win. Last year’s awards ceremony saw The Favourite, Roma, Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book winning the big name awards, so we’re expecting the honours to be shared once again for the 2020 BAFTAs.
