It’s awards season again and following up on its long list of nods for the BAFTAs, Joker has topped the Oscars 2020 nominations tally with a total of 11, which is very impressive for a comic book adaptation. It’s followed closely by 1917, The Irishman and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood with ten nominations each, so it looks like there might be a lot of shared honours this time around.
In addition to getting the highest number of nominations, Joker has also done well in terms of the big four with inclusions in three of the top categories. It’s in for Best Picture, Joaquin Phoenix is in the Bedt Actor category and Todd Phillips is down for Best Director, leaving only Best Actress in the top four without a nod for the film.
The other categories it is in are Writing (Adapted Screen Play) by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver, Best Cinematography for Lawrence Sher, Best Costume Design by Mark Bridges, Best Editing by Jeff Groff, Best Make Up for Nicki Ledermann and Kay Georgiou, Music (Original Score) by Hildur Guðnadóttir, and Sound Editing by Alan Robert Murray, Sound Mixing by Tom Ozanich, Dean Zupancic and Tod Maitland.

Hot on the heels of Joker are 1917, The Irishman and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood with ten nominations and they’re also in with a shout for a few of the big categories at the 92nd Academy Awards. They’re all nominated for Best Picture and Best Director for Sam Mendes, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino respectively. Only Leonardo DiCaprio will be up against Joaquin Phoenix for the Best Actor Academy Award for his role as Rick Dalton in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
The best of the rest includes Marriage Story, Little Women, Parasite and Jojo Rabbit, each with six nominations and Ford vs Ferrari getting placed in four categories. They all feature in the Best Picture category alongside Joker, but only Parasite has made into contention for the Directing with Bong Joon Ho’s nod being all the more impressive considering the film is Korean.
The areas that Joker didn’t do so well are in the Best Actress and supporting roles categories, but then the film was pretty much dedicated to the central character, so it definitely makes sense. It’s an impressive haul and it’s definitely going to be interesting to see how well it does during the 2020 Oscars awards ceremony on the 9th February.
