Marvel has definitely been leading the way in terms of the cinematic revival of comic book heroes, but DC Comics is slowly working its way up to raising its game and the latest new addition to the excitement is the reveal of Jason Momao as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The actor, who’s probably most recognisable for his role as Khal Drago in Game Of Thrones, had already been confirmed in the role back in October 2014, but the recent reveal from director Zach Snyder sees him in full costume for the first time, so check out the full image below. He will also reprise the role for Justice League, the next film in the DC movie series, and then later with his own dedicated film, Aquaman, in 2018.
The reveal came in the form of a Facebook and Twitter post from the director along with a couple of semi-cryptic messages that probably only make sense to old-school DC Comics fans. The first came in the Tweet, with Snyder referring to it with the note, “There is only one true King”, which draws in the concept of Aquaman being the king of Atlantis, the legendary lost underwater city. It makes a pretty big shout for the city to be a part of the Justice League storyline, so we should be in for a comic book world that includes Gotham, Metropolis and Atlantis.
The second clue is in the hashtag #unitetheseven, which is also the slogan in the picture itself. It refers to the seven original members of the Justice League, essentially DC’s equivalent of The Avengers, clearly implies that all of them will be drawn together for the new movie series. If that is the case then you can throw Central City, Coast City, Middletown and Mars into the mix.
The original Justice League members are Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and the Martian Manhunter and we already know that at least four of the seven will feature in the 2016 movie, so maybe it’s just a matter of time before the rest are announced too. However, our bet is that the final three members of the Justice League will be reserved for the sequel to the film in the coming years, so it’s going to be very interesting to see who will take on the roles of Flash, Green Lantern and the extraterrestrial Martian Manhunter.
Most of you will already know that the role of Superman will be continuing with Henry Cavill (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), following on from his origin story, Man Of Steel and that Ben Affleck (Gone Girl) has been cast in the role of the new Batman. Relative newcomer, Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), will play Diana Prince, AKA Wonder Woman, and Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane return from Man Of Steel as Lois lane, Perry White and Martha Kent.
If we had to choose the cast to take on the remaining three members of the Justice League, we’d want to see either Benedict Cumberbatch or Eddie Redmane in the frame for The Green Lantern, Armie Hammer, Daniel Craig or Channing Tatum as Flash and either Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michael Keaton or Oscar Isaac as Martian Manhunter.
