Following the retirement of The White Stripes, it was always going to be a matter of time before Jack White put out solo work. With the Jan 2012 release of single, Love Interruption, and the output of his first solo album, Blunderbuss, on the 23rd April 2012, he returned to the music scene with a bang.
The track listing for Blunderbuss is pretty dark, matching the brooding feel of the album artwork, which is a big departure from the old vivid red and white White Stripes albums of their early career. Going for a poignant black and white style, it marked a clear sign that things were going to be different.
Blunderbuss track listing:
1. Missing Pieces
2. Sixteen Saltines
3. Freedom At 21
4. Love Interruption
5. Blunderbuss
6. Hypocritical Kiss
7. Weep Themselves To Sleep
8. I’m Shakin’
9. Trash Tongue Talker
10. Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy
11. I Guess I Should Go To Sleep
12. On And On And On
13. Take Me With You When You Go
Love Interruption, the first tastes of what Blunderbuss was to sound like, starts out with acoustic simplicity and accompanying blues harmony vocals from Ruby Amanfu. It’s a slow burn, but soon becomes an addictive listen. The addition of soprano and bass clarinet to provide the melody for the song was a hint at a continuation of the musical experimentation Jack White has become known for over the years.
Jack performing two of the songs from Blunderbuss on Saturday Night Live on the 3rd of March 2012, which was a precursor to a big 2012 for the former White Striper. The singles from the album, including Freedom at 21, chocked up a big chunk of air play throughout the year, making a great return for Jack White.
