There have been rumours going all the way back to the very first announcement of Aquaman for the upcoming Justice League (2017) movie, but as we get closer to the release date, speculation continues about whether or not the Green Lantern will be in the film. If we were to call it, we’d probably have to say that he might make some kind of end film cameo or credits scene appearance, but it’s far from impossible that he’ll be making a full debut in the film.
The latest evidence in favour of the possibility is a song title leak, which references uniting the seven. It doesn’t take a maths genius to work out that Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg make five, the addition of Superman takes the tally up to 6 so if there is going to be seven Justice League members by the end of the film then there is one more character and planned.
It isn’t the first time we’ve heard the term as it was initially referenced on the reveal poster for Aquaman, which led to a big debate about whether or not it means the Justice League team or the seven seas that he rules. However it all plays out, it’s a lot of fun just talking about the possibility, and with Green Lantern Corps in the wings, we’re sure it’s just a matter of time before we see the character on the big screen again.
There is more fuel to the fire though as Steppenwolf directly refers to the Green Lantern in a line from the San Diego ComicCon trailer, which you can see below. Proclaiming that the Earth will fall without a Kryptonian or Lantern to defend it, he puts down a pretty big marker for the possibility of the arrival of the interstellar lawman.
Justice League (2017) ComicCon trailer:
While we are pretty certain that Superman will be making some form of reincarnated appearance during Justice League (2017), the line and all the speculation is far from confirmation that the Green Lantern will also be in the film. If DC and Warner Brothers are able to keep this one under their collective hat stand in the run up to the film’s release then we will be very impressed.
If the character does feature in the film then it should be one of the biggest moments in the plot, but the big question is who could possibly star in the role, which only recently had its own film with Ryan Reynolds as the title character. It wasn’t one of DC’s finest movie moments and it was probably instrumental in the recent reboot to the entire cinematic universe, so it’s not like there are significant shoes to follow in unlike Gal Gadot had for Wonder Woman.
With the recent announcement of the 13th Doctor as Jodie Whittaker, there is a certain amount of weight behind the idea of women playing traditionally male roles in sci-fi, so we wouldn’t entirely write it off here. One of the big problems for the casting is that with so many big name actors taken up with the likes of the Avengers and Guardians Of The Galaxy, there aren’t that many options left. As a result DC may well have to go with a fresh face like a lot of its other casting decisions, so it’s going to be very interesting to see whether or not the Green Lantern is even featured and if so then who might the lucky actor be.
