If you’ve seen any of the trailers you might be wondering is Morbius MCU, so here’s a rundown of what we know so far and how it could all connect up to become a part of the wider multiverse reality that we were introduced to in Spider-Man No Way Home and Venom Let There Be Carnage. The reality is that in the new world anything is possible and we won’t know for sure until the film lands in early 2022, but there’s a lot to go on, so we’re going to explain it all for you with as much clarity as possible.
The 2022 Morbius movie is essentially the origin story for anti-hero Michael Morbius who mutates to have vampire bat abilities in a bid to cure the blood disease that he’s suffered from since he was a young boy. However, in addition to his echo-location, enhanced speed, superhuman strength and ability to fly, the mutation has also left him with a powerful hankering for blood and hunting prey.
AdvertisementThat last bit is the kicker, because it means that instead of just chowing down on a mooing raw steak every now and again, he finds himself slashing away at people and draining them of blood like he’s Dracula. In essence, it continues Sony’s Spider-Man Universe building on Tom Harry’s efforts as Venom, but the question is whether or not it also forms part of the MCU.

What points to Morbius being part of the MCU
There are two main developments that point to the Morbius movie being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the first of these is the inclusion of Michael Keaton in the trailer. The actor starred as Adrian Toomes / Vulture in Spider-Man Homecoming, so his presence in the trailer, looking and sounding a lot like Toomes is enough to connect the films.
AdvertisementThe current Spider-Man is MCU, so by association, if the Vulture is in Morbius then you’ve got to assume that it’s in the same universe. But the problem with this assumption is that it doesn’t factor in the new Multiverse reality that we have with anything vaguely connected with Marvel.
When you look at the trailer again with this in mind, the reality is that Michael Keaton could well be playing Adrain Toomes once again, but that it’s a different one to the MCU, who we last saw languishing in prison. Alternatively, it could even be a different character altogether, although, we’re pretty sure that it’s going to be Vulture in some shape or form.
AdvertisementIf that isn’t enough to muddy the waters, the other possibility is that it is the same Adrian Toomes and it is a part of the same reality as the MCU, but it’s not meant as a core part of it. If you check any list of Marvel Cinematic Universe films, current and future, you won’t find Morbius on it, so if the Michael Keaton link is the same reality they’re clearly not classing it as a legitimate cannon film.
Which leads us on to the second big development linking things up, but if you haven’t seen Spider-Man No Way Home or Venom 2 then you might want to stop reading until you’ve got them under your belts. The development takes place within those films and while it’s very cool, you might want to catch them on the big screen before reading more about the MCU Sony Spider-Man Universe crossover.
Okay, with the warnings out of the way, it’s time to get into the details. In a credits scene in Let There Be Carnage, we saw that Eddie and Venom got transported over somehow from his universe into the same one as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. He lands and sees a TV report about Peter Parker being identified as the kid behind the mask.
However, in No Way Home, the universe crossover that brings the five villains over is linked to a spell about anyone that already knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Neither Brock nor Venom know about this, and in fact there doesn’t appear to be a Spider-Man in their universe, so it can’t really be the spell that brought them over.
If it wasn’t the spell that brought them over, then the logical assumption is that there’s more to the multiverse than meets the eye and there’s a fluidity to it all that can allow for pretty much any possibility. Just before they cross over, Venom is in the process of telling Eddie about his alien race having knowledge about other universes.
That seems like a big coincidence, so our theory is that it may well have been Venom that caused the jump and that it’s how the aliens spread throughout the multiverse, but we’ll have to wait for the prospect of Venom 3 and the next Spider-Man MCU film to find out for sure.
Getting back to the Morbius MCU link, what all of this means is that the film will have a variety of ways to write in Adrian Toomes without it necessarily meaning that the film is a part of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Venom: Let There Be Carnage had a huge crossover moment, but it’s not an MCU film and we think that’s going to be the same for the Living Vampire.
