It’s been a while since Interpol really lit up with the music scene with electric tracks like Evil and Next Exit, but they’ll be returning later this year with new album, El Pintor, and we’re hoping that it will be the killer track-laden record fans have been waiting for. It follows up 2007’s Our Love To Admire and their 2010 self-titled album, but in all honesty, we haven’t seen them at their best since their impressive second album, Antics, which launched them onto the international music stage.
El Pintor is scheduled for a release date of the 9th September 2014, coming out on vinyl, CD and digital download. To support the launch, Interpol has also confirmed a series of 2014/15 tour dates to give us all a chance to listen to the new material live, as well as getting a reminder of some of the epic tracks they’ve previously been responsible. You can see the detail for all of the tour dates below, which will see them covering the majority of major US cities, as well as a few gigs in London, a stop off in Manchester and a number of other European gigs.
To add to the anticipation, they’ve also released the first song from the album, All The Rage Back Home, which is available now on digital download from iTunes, having been launched on the band’s website on the 9th July 2013. We’ll be surprised if another track isn’t released before El Pintor hits the shelves, but the first audio already gives us a good feel for what to expect from the full album release in September and if it’s a hint at what’s still to come it could be their most impressive work since Antics.
The song itself is an alt-rock cult track in the making with a great switch-up of a lulling verse followed up by a driven chorus that’s reminiscent of one of our favourite Interpol songs, Slow Hands. It may not quite be on the same level, but it definitely feels like it’s going to grow in you over time. The overdriven, slightly reverb tinted, ringing electric guitar riffs are a thing of beauty all by themselves, giving the song a solid foundation to build on, and Paul Banks’ vocal are as good as they’ve ever been.
El Pintor will be Interpol’s first album release not to feature their former bassist, Carlos Dengler, who left the band shortly after recording their self-titled fourth album, in the run up to their support gigs on the U2 360 Degree tour. The band had pretty much been on hiatus ever since the end of the troubled tour in 2011 until their reformation last year, and while they’ll soon be back at the forefront of indie-rock, they’ve had to do it without long-time band member, Dengler.
The new album was written and recorded in their native New York City throughout 2013, giving yet more indications that the band has returned to its roots for its 5th studio record. In addition to All The Rage Back Home, which you can listen to for yourself below, Interpol has also put up a live recording of another new track from El Pintor, called Anywhere, from their Brixton Academy gig in March 2014, so we’ve added that below too to give you more of an idea about what to expect from the new album.
