Apart from high rank online battles, it doesn’t get any harder in Splatoon 3 than trying to work out how to beat the Octolings in stage 5 of After Alterna. The first couple of waves feel manageable, but then things tick up to 11 and the specials and projectiles start to come in thick and fast.
Before you know it, you’ve been wiped out and have to start all over again with the first wave of Octolings. However, it can be done and with the tips below, along with the video example, you should be able to replicate the process.
AdvertisementIf you don’t know what After Alterna is, it’s essentially a secret kettle level that you get when you complete each of the other kettles and bosses in the Splatoon 3 story campaign. Once you do that you can find the secret kettle back at Site 1 where you first arrived and it’s composed of a number of levels that culminates in stage 5 against the Octolings.

How to beat the Octolings
Beating the early Octolings is easy enough in Splatoon 3’s After Alterna end section, so it’s just a case of hitting them with a few good shots and they’re done. The problem comes when there are lots of them and they’re all firing at once with some of the trickier weapons in the game.
AdvertisementIf that isn’t enough, the final stage brings in pretty much infinite specials for them, so it can be easy to get splatted fast. To avoid this, follow the tips below to complete it and get back to your own multiplayer ranking journey:
- Get your upgrades up before you take on After Alterna – this might not be an option for you if you’re already at After Alterna’s Stage 5, but if you haven’t done that many upgrades then it might be better to get that sorted before putting all of your eggs into one tough-as basket. Having the sensor at max is a must, but having everything upgraded will make things way easier.
- Splat and move – don’t stay still for too long. Find one of the Octolings, take it out fast and get moving once again.
- Try not to take on too many enemies at once – aim for the one at a time rule to be on the safe side if you’re struggling with Stage 5 of After Alterna.
- Lay down a lot of ink – the more ground you have covered, the easier you’ll find it to escape an ambush. It also reduces the mobility options for the enemies, so get that Heroshot firing.
- Don’t forget your projectiles – not only should you use Little Fry to quickly dispatch the Octolings or to run distraction for you, but you also need to remember that you can change between the other projectile options you have. Use the C pad to change between them and use them all to your advantage.
- Always have an escape route – this links into laying down ink and keeping on moving, but the escape route that we found to be a safe bet was to have a circuit around the outside of the area to race around. This gives you something to rely on when you get into a pinch.
- Use your own specials – it can take a bit of getting used to using different specials, so if they’re too much of a distraction then don’t bother and just stick with the splash down, which you can see in the video below.
- Stay away from the ink pulses – during the third wave of Octolings you’ll get a lot of ink pules thrown at you. Avoid these like the plague and get ready to jump the pulses if you need to.
- Know where enemies are going to drop in – there’s a certain amount of predictability in where and when Octolings are going to spawn on the map, so look out for the patterns and be ready to pounce on them when they arrive.
