The scariest accommodation on Trip Adviser dusted off its gargoyles once again with Hotel Transylvania 2, which arrived on the big screen in Summer 2015. Following up on the 2012 initial outing for the wild and freaky residents of the Romanian guest house, the film had a lot of work cut out for itself in trying to die up to the success of the first movie, but with the much-loved creepy, kooky and spooky characters it went on to be another big hit for Sony Pictures Animation.
Release date
Cinema: Hotel Transylvania 2 had a UK release date of the 16th October 2015, following on from the slightly earlier US release on the 25th September 2015, three years after the first first film arrived. Contrary to a lot of other recent animated movies, it didn’t show in 3D as much in the UK from what we could see from the cinema listings, so a fair few of you probably didn’t have the opportunity to worry too much about how to watch it. However, it was released in Real 3D in the United States, and a few cinemas in Britain caught up a little during the release date window in the end. Visit our movie release dates page to see what else will be making its way to the big screen over the next year or so.
DVD, Blu-ray and digital download: Following its success at the cinema, it will be making its way to home entertainment in early 2016 with a UK release date on the 15th February on digital download, Blu-ray and DVD. It follows the US home entertainment release on the 12th January 2016 and you can see the details for the extras and special features below, along with the trailer for the film. Amazon has also got an exclusive DVD with activity set, which is available to pre-order below.
Story
While there have been a number changes at the hotel since the first film, some perceptions are in the blood in Transylvania where manager Count Dracula is concerned. Jonathan’s arrival sparked a lot of changes at the establishment as he won them all over in the first movie and stole the heart of Drac’s daughter Mavis. Now the hotel accepts human visitors, making even more successful in the process, and the young couple have a healthy, red headed little monster of their own, called Dennis, to take care of. The problem is that the little terror doesn’t appear to display any signs of his hereditary vampire features, resulting in Jonathan and Mavis to consider moving to California to find somewhere a little safer for the whipper snapper. Dracula pulls off all the stops to try to train Dennis to tap into to his inner monster, hauling his friends in to help along the way, but when things don’t go to plan he’s forced to ask his old dad Vlad for help and all hell breaks loose as a result.
Cast
Despite an all star ensemble cast, none of the big names sound a great deal like themselves in Hotel Transylvania 2, which helps to make the plot feel much more absorbing. Check out the trailer below to see for yourself and try to guess a single one of the voice actors before you read the rest of our cast list details. Leave a comment below if you manage to work any out. Pulling off a pretty decent comedy Transylvanian accent, Adam Sandler (Pixels) plays Dracula with Kevin James (Pixels) as his buddy Frankenstein, Steve Buscemi (Monsters University) is werewolf Wayne, David Spade (Grown Ups) stars as Griffin the Invisible Man and Keagan-Michael Key (Let’s Be Cops) replaces CeeLo Green as Murray the mummy. Selena Gomez (Hotel Transylvania) plays Mavis, Andy Samberg (Cuckoo) returns as Jonathan, and Mel Brooks arrives on the scene as Drac’s dad Vlad. Nick Offerman (A Walk In The Woods) voices Jonathan’s father, Fran Drescher (The Nanny) returns as Eunice, Frankenstein’s wife, and Molly Shannon (Life After Beth) as Wanda, Wayne’s furry other half.
Production
As with the first movie, Russian-born animator, director and producer, Genndy Tartakovsky (Iron Man 2), is in charge of the director’s chair for the movie and Michelle Murdocca has produced the movie. The plot was written by Robert Smigel and executive producers were Adam Sandler, Robert Smigel, Allen Covert and Ben Waisbren.

First impressions
It looks terrifyingly hilarious and if it can build on the creepy foundations of the original then it should be a lot of fun. It’s got some great looking animation, a very funny setup and the trailer below is class all by itself. Hotel Transylvania 2 should be one of the year’s best animated movies alongside Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur, so expect a lot of ghoulish comedy when it shuffles its way onto the big screen. With the UK release date falling a little closer to Halloween on the 31st October, it should be a lot of fun to watch it around that time of the year. Broken fingers crossed it’ll also get the 3D release over here too.
