Over and over and over and over and over, like a monkey with a miniature cymbal. We are ready, we are ready for the floor. Tell me do you stand by your man? Let’s sweat. We could go on, but you’ve probably got the point already that we’re pretty excited about the prospect of Hot Chip’s return this year with a brand new album, the cryptically entitled, Why Make Sense?
They’ve got a habit of creeping up on you in the silent disco of your tiny little mind and taking over the airwaves whenever they appear and we’re willing to bet the barn (we don’t have a barn, but you know what we mean) that they’ll be doing it again with their latest new material.
It’s set to descend onto an indie disco dance floor near you, along with all good music retailers and agents of digital download, on the 18th May 2015, ushering in the summer like a pair of bright yellow plastic wayfarers or a slowly dripping 99. It’s a pretty long while to wait, so it should give you more than enough space to get your brainwaves realigned to the concept of fun-loving electro pop genius and the associated moves that they’re bound to inspire.
While you’re working on that, you can also wrap your head around Hot Chip’s first musical output of the year, the equally cryptic Huarache Lights, which you can listen to below with the music video. What it means we’re not 100% sure, but what we do know is that we like it a lot, even the 1990s style wrapping interjections from the DJ Rashad sample of First Choice’s Let No Man Put Asunder.
OK, so we looked it up a little and we’re still nonplussed about what the song title means, but for any Times word-freak crossword fans out there, hauraches are a type of Mexican sandal beloved by the flower power kids of the 1960s. However, Huarache Lights are the name of a set of trainers from Nike Air and we can only guess that the truth of it all lies somewhere between the two.
It continues Hot Chip’s struggle with the aging process, despite the iconic band status. While it’s got a deep thinking inspiration behind it there’s more than enough fuzzy fun times for it to work on the surface as much as it does at the centre of the squashy old onion that’s gone into its construction.
Why Make Sense? will be available on CD, vinyl and digital download with the standard track list below, but for the Oliver aspiring music fans out there you can opt for the Special Edition version in either of the three formats including an extra EP featuring four new songs recorded during the album sessions.

To accompany their return to form, Hot Chip will also be heading out on the road this year – on tour, not as an odd homage to Forest Gump – but the bad news for anyone in the UK is that the stop offs in London, Manchester and Glasgow have already sold out. The rest of the saunter will see them gallivanting across Europe before heading stateside for the US leg of their tour. The good news is that they’ll be back in the UK for the heat of the heart of summer for a number of festival dates including T In The Part in Perhshire, Scotland on the 10th July 2015 and Green Man Festival in Brecon, Wales on the 21st August 2015.
