It isn’t too long after the sorting ceremony in Hogwarts Legacy that you discover that you need to work out how to open locks, because the entire map is dotted with locked doors. However, the game doesn’t give you anything to go on during your first few days at the school of witchcraft and wizardry.
There are a couple of different types of locked door, though, with puzzle doors containing treasure at Hogwarts, as well as the various levels of padlocks all over the place. The puzzles will require you to solve them individually and you can do this straight away, but the locks require a certain skill.
AdvertisementWe’ll show you a few of the solutions for the puzzle doors at the bottom of the page, but the main focus will be on the locks. You’ll need a spell to crack these suckers open and that obviously means picking up Alohamora, which we’ll cover in the section below.

How to unlock Alohamora and open padlocks
To get Alohamora you need to progress a little in the story until you get an Owl Mail from the caretaker of Hogwarts, Mr Gladwin Moon. He’s pretty funny with an excellent voice. The story is that someone is terrorising him by placing Demiguise statues to scare him throughout the Legacy world.
You’ll first meet him when you go to Hogsmeade for the first time, so it doesn’t take too long to get the story quest. It comes not too long after you get back to Hogwarts after the troll attack and he’ll send you off on a search to collect the moons that the statues hold onto.
AdvertisementSomeone has used a Boggart to discover Mr Moon’s fear, which is the Demiguise, and the added torment is that they’ve given each of them a moon that glows at night, tying in with Gladwin’s name. Your mission in the quest is to head on into the teachers common room area to collect them, so that he can go back into the area.
The problem is that there’s a padlock on the door, so to start you off he’ll teach you Level 1 for Alohamora, which is enough to open the lock. This will then give you the skill for the rest of the game. To collect the moons on the Demiguise statues, you’ll need to search for them at night and interact with them when you get close.
Use Revelio to see where they are during the quest and you’ll use a similar process to find them once you complete the quest for Mr Moon. After that he’ll send you out in the world to find more of them, so he can get back to his normal travels around Hogwarts, to Hogsmeade and Hamlets around the school.
Collect 9 of them, take them back to Mr Moon and he’ll teach you Level 2 Alohamora, to expand you lock-picking skills. You get to the final level 3 of the spell when you take him another 13 Demiguise statue moons. You can see a big batch of them in the video below, which will give you all of the Hogsmeade statues.
AdvertisementIf you then travel to the Hamlets throughout the Hogwarts Legacy map you’ll pick up another one Demiguise Statue moon at each of them. They’re easy to find. Travel at night and then use Revelio to look for the telltale shape of the statue. Go to the house containing it and pick it up.
If you don’t know how to change to night, just go to the map screen and press down on the right analogue stick to go from day to night. Repeat the process around Hogwarts and you have more than enough to get all of the lock-picking Alohamora levels.
How to open locks
When you use Alohamora, you’ll then have the lock itself to open. This involves using both analogue control sticks to turn the dials. Start with the inner one and turn it until you see the middle section moving.
Keep it in that position and then start to turn the outer dial until the mechanism in the bottom right of the screen starts to move. Keep them both in the positions that trigger the movement and after a few seconds it’ll open the lock and you can go through the door. You can see a couple of examples of this in action in the video above.
How to open puzzle doors in Hogwarts Legacy
AdvertisementThings get a little trickier with the puzzle doors dotted around the school in Hogwarts Legacy. The general idea is that you’ve got to get the right combination of image cross referencing the number sequences you’ll find when you reveal the clue.
However, if you’re struggling to line these up, you can just take advantage of the fact that it’s just a two variable sequence, so you should be able to crack it. If you choose the first one on the dial furthest away and then try each of the other on the dial closes you can eliminate options and narrow things down.
You can see an example solution above to get an idea about how it works, but if you image it being like a number combination, working out two digits is way easier than three or more. If the one furthest away isn’t right with each of the images on the one closest to the door then you can discount it and move on to the next. Repeat and you’ll eventually get the solution.
