If you’re even remotely interested in Japanese animation then you are bound to have heard of Gundam, but for anyone that is only vaguely aware of Godzilla, Gundam is an epic franchise anime series that started way back in 1979. It has been recreated in loads of different media, including novels and movies, and now Gundam 3DS is going to give it a Nintendo 3DS incarnation.
As with all other Gundam series going right the way back to Mobile Suit Gundam, the game centres around massive battle robots called mecha or mobile suits. Taking on Gundam, you’ll have to pit your robotic skills against more than a few rival robots in a bid to stave off disaster.
The UK release date has has been set for late September 2011 and by the looks of the trailer, it could go one of two ways. Either it’s a 3D flying classic like Starfox 64, or it’s a disappointing robo game like Iron Man 2 on the iPhone/iPod Touch.
Gundam 3DS looks set to have quite a sophisticated gameplay fight system with quick reflexive movement and an array of weapons. The targeting system looks accurate and the ability to go from first person aerial shooter to hand to hand battle mode could work well.
