Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 age rating, UK release date & more

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 UK release date and age rating

Having had a brief cameo appearance in Thor Love and Thunder, Star Lord and the gang will be back with the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 UK release date planned for 2023. You can also find out more about the age rating certificate, cast, story and runtime to give you everything you need to know about the film.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has just kicked things off with Phase 5, which began with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in February 2023. Guardians 3 will be the second film for the next phase, but before then there was a Holiday Special, which had shades of Star Wars.

The story for the Holiday Special about the team getting Peter Kevin Bacon as his Christmas present. It’s a bit of fun in general and definitely better than the Star Wars effort back in 1978, but far from a big development in terms of the action.

Story

Vol. 3 will pick things up with the Guardians after the events of Avengers Endgame, and the Special, so Peter is still pretty cut up about the death of Gamora on Morag. We saw in Love and Thunder that the team is at least functioning relatively normally, despite missing Gamora, and they’ll have a brand new mission to save the universe again in the third film.

The plot continues the story with Adam Warlock, an artificial being that is created by the High Evolutionary for Ayesha, the High Priestess of the Sovereign people. She’s out for revenge after they double crossed her in the deal for Nebula early on in Vol. 2.

The story was teased at the end of the last film during the credits scene when the High Priestess reveals what she’s got planned for them. However, if you know the comics or you played the game then you know that Adam Warlock is ordinarily much more complex than just a tool of destruction for the High Priestess.

There’s also the potential of the Magus, which is the darker side of Adam Warlock. It was the final boss fight in the Guardians of the Galaxy game, so it’s possible he might flip out and split into the the Magus before the end credits scene rolls in the final part of the trilogy.

Cast

The main Guardians of the Galaxy cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan and Pom Komlentief, will be back as Peter Quill/Star Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket, Groot, Nebula and Mantis. They’ll be joined once again by Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord and Sean Gunn as Kraglin. Elizabeth Debicki will also be back as the golden High Priestess, Ayesha.

Will Poulter takes on the role as the super being Adam Warlock in Vol 3, who is usually pretty chiseled, but it doesn’t look like he’s gone through that much of a body transformation for the role. Chukwudi Iwugi plays the main villain, High Evolutionary, who is depicted in the comics as originating from Manchester, UK, but in the film he just visited Earth previously, which inspired his odd re-imagining on Counter Earth.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 UK release date

During Kevin Feige’s huge ComicCon presentation in 2022, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 UK release date was scheduled for May 5th, 2023. It’ll be out in America on the same date as things stand at the moment, but there’s sometimes a little difference as we get closer to the release.

Thankfully, the date didn’t change around at all since then, but with more time since the pandemic there’s less likelihood of seeing big changes to the release schedule for MCU films. Hopefully the days of films being postponed for a year are behind us, although that didn’t stop The Marvels being pushed back a few times.

There aren’t any other big films out on the same date, so that should mean it’ll take the number 1 spot at the box office in both the UK and North America. Beau Is Afraid is out a couple of weeks earlier, so probably won’t trouble it, and then Fast X is out on May 21st, so it’ll have a clear run for a couple of weeks.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming out in May 2023, it should go on to be available to buy /rent digitally with early access around July. This will then give it a likely DVD, Blu-ray and 4K release date in the UK towards the end of the summer. You can see more details for home media with the link below.

As things stand, Marvel films go on to stream on Disney+ approximately 2-4 months after they arrive on the big screen, so that should be between July and September 2023. The earlier date would put in on par with Thor Love and Thunder, which came out in cinemas on the 7th July 2022 before streaming on Disney+ on the 9th September 2022.

Age rating in the UK and America

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 age rating has been confirmed in North America to be PG-13. It has also been announced for the UK by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) with the release date this week and it’s been given a 12A certificate.

This time around you’ve got moderate violence and some injury details on the fighting front and the trailers feature that Peter Quill “Nooooo” scene which implies some tears might be required. There’s also the threat of the villains with Chukwudi Iwugi looking pretty menacing as High Evolutionary, and some occasional strong language.

There was already a lot we can take from previous MCU certifications, which are usually 12A in cinemas. This is mirrored with a PG-13 in America, which has been the case for the previous two films in the series.

Notes for previous films include superhero violence, sex references and language that earned Vol 2 its 12 certificate in 2017. For Ant-Man and the wasp Quantumania the details included mild fantasy violence and rude humor, so that should give you a good idea about what to expect from GotG3.

Runtime

As with the age rating, the runtime was confirmed as we got closer to the release date and it has come in at 2 hours and 30 minutes. This makes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 the longest in the series with the others being closer to being two hours long.

Trailers

The official trailer for Guardians of the galaxy Vol 3 (above) arrived in December 2022, giving us our first big look at the film. Chukwudi Iwuji looks impressive as High Evolutionary and Rocket sounds like he’s going to tap into the wider skills of Bradley Cooper’s acting with a story that delves into his origins.

It was followed by the second trailer below in February 2023. It focuses more on Pete’s story and his ongoing struggle with the death and pseudo-rebirth of Gamora. You also get more background on High Evolutionary’s vision for a perfect society and Groot stomping down on Adam Warlock.

There’s a lot of wild and fantastical scenes in both trailers with sections looking like they were inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But, it’s also clear that things are going to get very real in comparison to the light-hearted Christmas special we just had over on Disney Plus.
