As there’s just a couple of Tweets to go on at the moment, the God of War TV series release date and how many episodes details are a little thin on the ground, but we’re going to give it a shot anyway. There’s way more to go on than you might imagine, so sit back, grab your axe and get ready for some Groa level prophesying.
The news came just a month after the release of God of War Ragnarok, which has gone on to be one of Sony’s biggest first-party games ever. If you’re new to the series and you’re just here because you were curious about the TV series, check out our bosses page, which will tell you everything you need to know about how things are going to go down.
AdvertisementIf anything, the news that there’s going to be a TV series adapted from the gaming franchise is only going to make the titles even more popular. If you haven’t played either one of the God of War games yet, we definitely recommend it with both being Game of the Year winners for us for both the original in 2018 and Ragnarok in 2022.
When will the God of War TV series release on Amazon Prime
The biggest thing to take into account is that the God of War TV series has only just been announced with nothing more than the wisp of a rumor for it prior to the Tweets. Up until then the focus was all on Ragnarok, but not that the release date for the closing chapter of the Norse Saga has come and gone there’s going to be a lot more focus on the Amazon Prime show.
AdvertisementWith no filming footage anywhere and just the Tweets you’ve got to imagine that things are fairly early on for creation of the TV series, which sort of rules 2023 out of the equation. It would have to be a very rushed production to get something out in time for the end of next year, so a better bet is 2024.
The safest bet in terms of a good production window is late 2024, and with the wintry conditions of Midgard a Holiday 2024 estimate makes a lot of sense. It’s definitely a good estimate for when the TV series will stream, but that also gives us Autumn 2024 and Q1 2025 as bookend options too.
AdvertisementThe big question is whether or not Amazon Prime can get the show done in time for an earlier 2024 release. If you look at other big examples, it seems like a big stretch to land anything for early 2024 and if anything it could be as late as 2025 or even 2026 as a very late contender.
If you look at Amazon’s other big recent release, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, you’re looking at around 4 years between going public and being available to stream on Prime. If you track that forward for the God of War TV series that puts us as far as 2026.
However, COVID had a big impact on the production of The Rings of Power, so we’re not expecting this to be quite so long. A better example would be The Last of Us TV series adaptation, which was announced in 2020 and will now stream on HBO in January 2023.
If you take this as the best comparison then the God of War TV series should have a release date in October 2025. That feels like a long way away, so we’re hoping that there might be some mitigating circumstances to speed things up.
One of the biggest things to take into account is the fact that Cory Barlog wasn’t he game director for God of War Ragnarok. Either he’s been sunning himself if Santa Monica, or he’s actually been busy with another project, which would put the Amazon Prime TV series in the frame.
If that’s the case then it’s entirely possible that things are more advanced than they appear. Hopefully, that gives it at least the possibility of a late 2024 release. The counter argument for this is that he may have been busy on a sequel to Ragnarok, which might come out in 2026 if it has a similar gap between the 2018 and 2022 games.
AdvertisementOur Groa prediction is winter 2024 and with a fair wind, Bifrost Bridge and some prior activity pre-dating the TV show announcement, it’s definitely possible.

How many episodes will there be in the God of War TV series
You might say how big is a piece of string, but again there’s more to go on that you might think. To start with, we’re expecting the series to run for at least two seasons to cover the Norse Saga side of things, which means Season 1 will tell the story of God of War 2018 where Kratos and Atreus travel to the tallest mountain in the Nine Realms to scatter Faye’s ashes.
That means it’ll have to be chunky without being too long, so anything between six and ten episodes is a good ballpark. The Rings of Power was 8 episodes long with each being a little over an hour long, and a similar number would work well enough for Season 1 of God of War.
All seasons of The Mandalorian were 8 episodes too and if you’re looking for a slightly tenuous gaming comparison, Sonic Prime was 8 episodes as well. However, the best of the Game of Thrones seasons were 10 episodes long and with Cory Barlog’s focus on character development that would allow more space for it and reduce the chances of the TV series appearing rushed.
As a result, our Groa prediction is 10 episodes and we’re hoping there’s going to be the same continuous shot approach as in both God of War (2018) and Ragnarok.
