Continuing with our guide to the God of War Ragnarok bosses, here’s how to beat the dragon Nidhogg. In the game the mythological creature is the protector of the roots of the World Tree and you need to shift it out of the way for Freya to get through, so you need to defeat it with her help.
It may not be anywhere near as big in size as Hraeslir, the dragon you get to fight on the way to the top of the mountain in God of War (2018), but it’s got some tough moves. It’s biggest unique attribute is that it can open up realm tears, which adds a little extra dimension into the mix.
AdvertisementTo begin with, Nidhogg will be halfway entrenched inside a realm tear, which gives it a certain amount of protection. Kratos will need to drag it out in order to beat it, but it’s at this stage that the boss fight gets a whole lot more complicated.

How to get Nidhogg out of the realm tear?
To start with you’ll need to dodge Nidhogg’s energy slashes and chomping bites before getting in close to its head to do a little melee damage. You can parry it’s downward claw attack, which will give you an opening to unleash hell with a series of combos.
AdvertisementBack off when it charges up the ground with blue energy and get ready to hit it with a precision axe throw, which will incapacitate it. This is your opportunity to drag it out of the realm tear with R3, which will cue up a mini cinematic where Kratos smashes it against a tree before completing the move to bring it out into the open with the Blades of Chaos.
How to defeat Nidhogg once its out of the Realm Tear?
Getting Nidhogg out of the realm tear is definitely progress, but it just makes the boss all the more dangerous. It’s a this stage that it’s tale comes in the mix, which is charged up right the way to its super sharp tip.
AdvertisementDodge its spike move and when you see the circle prompts you can hit it with a shield counter, which will bring it down for some free hits. When its back up, you can again dodge roll out of the way of its energy blasts as you try to weave in closer to its head.
You’ll also have parry opportunities like before with it’s downward claw attack, so try to be ready to get that with quick reflexes as it will give you a solid opening. You can also parry its head attacks, which will give you some more wailing time on it.
It still does the charged ground attack, so again you can back off from this and hit it with another precision axe throw to give you yet another opening. Combine all fo this and you should be able to get to the second mini cinematic in the Nidhogg boss fight and Kratos holds its mouth open and tells Freya that he has it.
This give Freya a chance to get to the World Tree root to get what you need and then she joins in the fight to land a hit on its head, which begins the third and final phase. Nidhogg wraps itself around a tree and starts firing at you with its tail, which you can dodge relatively easily.
It also opens up realm tears to fire its tail through at you, which again you can dodge. When its down from the tree it will suck in rocks with its stomach and then hurl them at you, which is an easy block.
From this point on you’ll need to aim precision axe throws at the sigils that Freya fires out on Nidhogg. You’ll need to get into a good position to see these first, so look for the purple circles and sprint to a location that gives you a clear shot at them.
AdvertisementWail away when it falls to the ground. You might want to switch to the Blades of Chaos throughout the fight to mix up your attacks and they will come in handy to get in your damage when its up high in the tree. You will also need to use your Blades spear attack on the sigils to burn them for the second phase of these.
After this you should be able to beat Nidhogg with the tips above and get the R3 finisher moment. However, this is a false dawn and you’ll need to chip it down once more. It will also unleash more powerful stomach attacks, which are tougher to avoid.
After a couple of these, Freya will fire a sigil into its tummy and you can hit it with the Leviathan Axe to deliver a huge blow to the beast. A few more melee attacks on the dragon’s head will give you the real R3 death shot and you’ll be done.
There’s a cinematic closer, which is cool. Freya fighting alongside Kratos in God of War Ragnarok is definitely a sight to behold.
