Impressionism, symbolism and brilliant colour.
From his early years in Paris, labouring on the Panama Canal and his journeys to Tahitian paradises, Paul Gauguin travelled the world searching for inspiration for his varying styles of art. He had a brief spell with Van Gogh in Arles until his disillusionment with impressionism and the razor blade & ear incident, but it was his move towards primitivism and the pastoral that allowed him to stand out as a leading post-impressionist painter.
However, it’s been some 50 years since the last dedicated exhibition to Gauguin’s work hit the UK, so news that one will feature at the Tate Modern later this year is significant.
Starting on the 30th September 2010 and running all the way through to 16th January 2011, the Gauguin exhibition at the Tate Modern will feature some of his finest sculptures, ceramics and paintings, including Teha ‘amana has many Parents (1893) below.
