Video games and big screen movies don’t usually go well together, but Ryan Reynolds (The Croods 2) could be the man to buck the trend with Free Guy, so here’s our look ahead at the UK release date (details below), along with everything else you need to know. This will cover the UK age rating, plus our parents guide, the story details, and cast info to give you the low-down on the upcoming release.
The story is a bit of a bizarre one with Reynolds playing a bank employee called Guy in a video game set in Free City. He’s got a big, wide open world experience all around him, but he ordinarily just ignores it and goes about his job. That is until he meets Milly, AKA Molotov Girl, who opens his eyes to the reality of the situation.

It’s not going to be easy though, because the powers that be are set against them and they’ll have killer bunnies, collapsing buildings and an oversized replica of Guy to deal with.
Cast
In addition to Reynolds as the lead character, Guy, the cast also includes Lil Rel Howery as his best friend Buddy, Jodie Comer (The Last Duel) as both Milly and Molotov Girl and Taika Waititi (The Suicide Squad) as Antoine, the boss of the company behind Free Guy. Joe Keery (Stranger Things) plays developer Keys, who helps Milly create Guy’s awareness, and Utkarsh Ambudkar plays Mouser, as Keys work colleague.

Free Guy UK release date
The film had a UK release date of Tuesday the 13th August 2021. It was initially planned to come out worldwide in December 2020, but the production was affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic, so the dates had to be put back. The first trailer arrived a year ago, along with the original release date, so it’s good to see that it finally came out here in the UK.
Free Guy also released in the US and Canada on the same date as in Britain, and it was one of the summer’s big blockbuster movies. It had competition from Aretha Franklin biographical drama, Respect, and Don’t Breathe 2, which came out on the same weekend. However, it’s closest rival was The Suicide Squad, which had its release date a couple of weeks beforehand.
AdvertisementWith the late summer release, it will then come out on DVD, Blu-ray and digital in winter 2021. However, as a 20th Century Fox film, it was always bound to arrive on Disney+ shortly after it’s debut on the big screen. It is now available to stream through the service and you can check out the age rating details below if you’re looking at watching the film.

Age rating and parents guide
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) announced the official UK age rating a couple of weeks ahead of the release date, and it’s been classified as 12A. It’s similar to the certification that was already in for the US market of PG-13, so you can take a lot from that in terms of what to expect from the film in terms of our parents guide.
Our initial projection had Free Guy to get a British certificate of 12 and that has gone on to be the case. The trailer is explosive and packed with action, but the violence is way more slap stick than in the likes of The Suicide Squad. Although, this wasn’t enough to bring it in under 12 despite it’s tongue-in-cheek outlook and cheery demeanor. There are plenty of guns in the mix, including a rocket launcher that Molotov Girl fires, which inevitably impacted the age rating.
The parents guide notes also include strong fantasy violence throughout, language and crude and/or suggestive references. We’ll update you with more details on the film as they get confirmed. Runtime
Free Guy has been confirmed for a runtime of 115 minutes, so it’s lengthy enough without being too much of a drain on time.
