Throwing his hat into the Dr Who Series 8 guest star ring, Frank Skinner is the latest in what’s becoming a longish line of famous faces to get in on the Tardis-based action. Apparently he’s been angling for a spot on the show for years, being a fully certified Doctor Who maniac, and he’s finally had his desperate pleas for inclusion heard through the sands of time by the powers that be (Moffat).
He might not be the first with a bit of comic might behind him going into the breach later this year, Ben Miller was announced as one of the upcoming villains last month, but he’s definitely the first from Dudley, so that’s something at least. The comedian and TV presenter will be making a guest appearance in one of the upcoming episode’s of Series 8, joining Peter Capaldi for his inaugural year in the Tardis flying role as the 12th Doctor Who.
Steven Moffat was quick on the draw pocking a bit of fun at Skinner as the announcement was made, commenting, “It’s no secret that Frank’s been pitching vigorously to get into Doctor Who for a while. He’s been volunteering to be ‘third monster on the left’ as long as I’ve been in this job, but now, in Jamie Mathieson’s sparkling script, we finally have a part that can showcase all of Frank’s famous wit and charm. Hopefully he’ll get out of my garden now.”
Teasing accusation of sinister stalker like behaviour aside, Frank Skinner was unabashedly excited to get the opportunity to star in an episode of the 8th series of the contemporary Dr Who production. Talking about the announcement h said, “I love this show. I subscribe to the Doctor Who magazine, I’ve got a Tardis ringtone, a five-foot cardboard Dalek in my bedroom and, when I got the call saying they wanted me to read for the part, I was in the back of my tour bus watching episode three of The Sensorites.”
He’s clearly a big fan of the series and will be getting an episode to work on that has been written by Being Human script writer, Jamie Mathieson. Considering the supernatural nature of Mathieson’s previous work, combined with the fact that he used to be a stand-up comic himself, we should be in for a freaky fright fest with a few class one-liners thrown in for good measure.
Skinner joins the ranks of other famous faces that have recently been announced as guest stars. In addition to Ben Miller’s villainous appointment, we’ve also had confirmation that former Spooks actress, Hermione Norris, will be getting a part in an episode set filmed in Lanzarote, along with Ellis George, Tony Osoba and Phil Nice. Tom Riley and Keeley Hawes have also been announced as guest cast members, with Hawes taking on the role of a new Dr Who baddy called Ms Delphox.
