It’s been a staggering 19 years since the Foo Fighters released their self titled debut album back in July 1995, which had been written and recorded entirely by front man and former Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl, following the death of Kurt Cobain a year earlier. Since then they’ve managed to clock up a total of 7 albums to date and the good news for fans is that they’ve recently announced a new addition to the tally with the release of a brand new album entitled Sonic Highways at the end of 2014.
Following up on 2011’s Wasting Light, the new record will be available on CD, vinyl and digital download in the US, UK and worldwide on Monday the 10th November 2014. Pre-orders for the CD and vinyl versions of the album became available on the 11th August 2014. The vinyl release also includes a download card and it will be available with one of nine different covers.
The vinyl cover options include eight that have been designed around one of the cities in which the album was recorded – Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. While they’ll all be released in shops from November, the only way to order the specific cover of your choice is through the Foo Fighter website.
Unfortunately, none of the tracks have been released to preview the new material as of yet, but we’re expecting an update on this in the not too distant future. We’ll update here as soon as a preview track or single makes it’s way out of the Foo Fighters UFO black hole machine, so check back in from time to time to find out more. However, to compensate a little, check out the teaser video below to get a few little snippets of the sounds that will be on the album.
Sonic Highways was produced by Foo Fighters themselves, alongside long-time Dave Grohl collaborator Butch Vig, who also produced their last album, along with their 2009 Greatest Hits record, as well as 1991’s Nirvana masterpiece, Nevermind. Together they’ve created 44 minutes of new material, consisting of 8 tracks, each recorded in one of the 8 different cities mentioned above. Clearly Dave Grohl (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Pat Smear (rhythm guitar), Nate Mendel (bass), Taylor Hawkins (drums and backing vocals) and Chris Shiflett (lead guitar) are keen to reiterate their octopus inspired output efforts.
Foo Fighters, Sonic Highways tracklist:
1. Something From Nothing
2. The Feast and The Famine
3. Congregation
4. What Did I Do?/God As My Witness
5. Outside
6. In The Clear
7. Subterranean
8. I Am A River
In addition to the creation of their eighth studio album and to celebrate their 20th anniversary, Foo Fighters will also be taking part in a TV series directed by Dave Grohl and also entitled Sonic Highways. The documentary will be coming to HBO in the States at 11pm on the 17th October 2014 and is inevitably made up of 8 episodes, which Grohl describes as a “love letter to the history of American music”. A recent announcement from the BBC has also confirmed that the series will be airing in the UK from the 26th October 2014 with episodes one, two, seven and eight on BBC 4 and episodes three to six on BBC iPlayer. Again, check out the teaser trailer below to get a few snippets of what to expect.
