Far Cry 6 setting? Where will it be set?

Far Cry 6 setting

News just in. Far Cry 6 will be set in a South American dictatorship starring Giancarlo Esposita. The release date has been confirmed for the 18th February 2021, but you can see some of our previous speculation below.

Having played the sheer wondrous scale of Far Cry 5 to the nth degree, it’s time to start looking forward to the prospect of Far Cry 6 and the big question for us is where will it be set. The game is rumoured to be in development, so we might get some details on the setting at E3 2020, but for now here are some of the pointers that could indicate where the next game in the series might be located.

Previous Far Cry settings

Firstly, we can probably discount everywhere the game has been set in the past, because games usually mix things up a bit. The series started out in 2004 with the very first Far Cry title, which was located on a mysterious string of tropical islands.

It went on to get a sequel, which moved things to central Africa and pitched in with three antagonists and delivering yet more acclaim for the series. It’s got remake written all over it one day, but we’ll be very surprised if Ubisoft return to the heartland of the Diamond Continent for the sixth entry.

Far Cry 3 returned to a different island setting in between the Indian and Pacific Oceans and then four took things to the fictional Himalayan country of Kyrat where it’s king Pagan Min ruled supreme.

Far Cry 5, the most recent numbered game in the series, ported gamers to the wonders of Hope County, a fictional location set within Montana. It was then followed up a year later in 2019 by Far Cry: New Daw, which continued the Hope County setting, but placed it 35-years after the end of 5, as the dust had settled on the nuclear Armageddon that had been triggered. You can check out the wingsuit action for the fifth game in the main series to see the location for yourself or check out the Far Cry website for more details at https://far-cry.ubisoft.com/game/en-gb/home.

Other recent Ubisoft settings

Ubisoft has been pretty busy since Far Cry 5 and New Dawn. The biggest release was The Division 2 in 2019, which was set in Washington DC, yet another US location, and then there was Assassin’s Creed Odyssey towards the end of 2018 in Peloponnesian Era Greece. The Division 2 didn’t have any possible teases for the Far Cry 6 setting, but there are hints that the next Assassin’s Creed game will take place in the Norse lands of Scandinavia, so that rules out Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

Finally, there was Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, which came out in October 2019, which took place in on a fictional island chain in the Pacific Ocean.

Where might Far Cry 6 be set?

It seems unlikely that Ubisoft will be returning to the US again, but then Far Cry 5 was such a huge hit commercially. They could move things to another environment in North America, either in the colder climbs of Canada, the swampland of Louisiana or the Florida Everglades. However, this still seems doubtful when you look back on the series as a whole and other recent Ubisoft games.

There’s a slim chance it’ll be another “island” location, but with Breakpoint and a number of Far Cry games having already done this it would feel a bit like a cop out. You could argue that this would see the series returning to its origins, but we’ll still be surprised.

Africa has been done, but could possibly get a return, maybe to a different area like modern day Egypt or the Southern tip. Mainland Asia has had its day in the Far Cry sun too, which doesn’t leave too many options that fit the MO of the games. Britain will be covered by Watch Dogs: Legion when it arrives and in all fairness it would be a stretch for FC with just squirrels and tabby cats to hunt.

With so many areas kind of ruled out, you’ve got to imagine that Ubisoft will be shipping the series off to a brand new location with a fairly unique environment. It’ll also need good wildlife to fit in with that element of the series, which would rule out most of Europe. Instead, the options would be: Central and South America with a Cartel focus possibly, the wilder portions of Eastern Europe (although the wildlife there is very similar to Montana with wolves, brown bears, wolverines, bison and big-ish cats) or maybe South East Asia.

The only one of those that sounds both exciting and different enough from the rest of the series is Central/South America, which is our top pick for the Far Cry 6 setting. The wildlife is cool with anaconda, caiman, llama, piranhas, condor, capybara and jaguar, and then the environment has some impressive variation with vast rivers, mountain ranges and the huge scope of the rainforest.

Throw in a crazed drug lord, corrupt government officials, environmental concerns and a twisting story that draws the main playable characters into its web of crazy and you’re all set for the next Far Cry game.
