There wasn’t much to go on when it first arrived, but Ubisoft put out the slightly random Far Cry 5 teaser trailer back in early 2017, which you can see in full below. I was all so ambiguous at the time, but we didn’t have too long to wait to find out the game, which went on to arrive on the 27th March 2017.
The exciting prospect of another Far Cry adventure following up on 2014’s massive fourth game in the series, was pretty palpable a year ahead of the release. However, it pretty clear that the series was going to be taking a very different direction for the fifth installment with the teaser trailer setting the scene for a Deliverance meets Red State concept for the game. While the end result is a bit more tongue in cheek, it still feels like a new experience with the setting in cult territory, Montana.
Far Cry 5 teaser trailer:
Where all previous releases in the series have been set in more exotic climates, ranging from tropical islands to rogue African and Himalayan states, Far Cry 5 has put down its roots in the apple pie of the United States. Specifically, the teaser trailer confirms that it’ll be taking place in Hope County, Montana with the Rocky Mountains, wild rivers and expansive grassy plains for its new playground. However, don’t expect anything remotely similar to The Waltons.
If you’ve played any of the previous games then you’ll know that things are never tranquil where a Far Cry title is concerned and that definitely looked like it was going to be the case in Hope County. While the teaser is relatively short and quiet on the surface, there’s a lot of horror going on in it if you look closely, with cult elements cutting through it.
It starts out with an eerie scream in the woods overshadowed by snow-capped mountains before featuring a body floating downstream, a man running wildly through a corn field and some dude getting his head smashed into the bell in the tower of a small rural church. Other than that, the game remained a mystery at the time of the teaser trailer release. However, you can rest assured that there’s just as much helicopter, wingsuit and bullet blasting action as any of the previous games, and the playground is the most impressive to-date.
As ever, the most important aspect of the game will be the main antagonist, which will set the tone for the battle that is sure to go down in Hope County. It had its work cut out for it to go one better than King Pagan Min from Far Cry 4 and the various villains from the third game in the series. While the general consensus from reviews is that Eden’s Gate cult leader, Joseph Seed, isn’t quite so well rouned, Far Cry 5 has gone on to be a lot of fun.
You can find out more about the storyline with our opening walkthrough video below, which shows you what Seed is all about. It also features a little gameplay, but if you want to see more you can see our full playlist for the game at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMmhstpr6cwPL5P-4YdEj8kbbjwlbCZh7.
