It’s been a big few weeks for Bethesda Games Studios, first with the release of the Doom reboot teaser trailer and now the official announcement of Fallout 4, which will be the first new addition to the series since Fallout New Vegas back in 2010 on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The announcement of the game comes replete with the first official trailer, which you can see for yourself below, but with E3 2015 just around the corner there’s bound to be much more of the game waiting in the wings.
Sadly, the trailer doesn’t really give too much away about the angle the game has taken, which is why there’s going to be so much anticipation for what Bethesda will be saying, or more importantly showing at their E3 showcase on Sunday, June 14th at 7 pm pacific time (3am on the 15th June in the UK). However, there are a few things that we can take from the trailer to give us a bit more of an idea about what to expect from the game and the first is inevitably the graphics, although this needs to be taken with a pinch of salt as the visuals in the trailer below are probably just video scenes or a pre-alpha hybrid.
That said, if the finished product does resemble the official trailer below then it’s safe to say that the graphics are definitely a step up on New Vegas, but not close to being the best we’ve seen on the new generation of consoles. The game is set to be released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox ONE and high spec PC, so you’d expect there to have been at least some level of improved graphics, but from what we’ve seen these might not be quite as showstopping as gamers are starting to get used to with the sheer detail and rendered brilliance of modern day gaming.
However, Fallout 3 wasn’t exactly the most polished looking title in its day either and that didn’t stop it going on to be considered by many to be the game of the year, so it’s possible that it will all come down to the gameplay. For this, we expect things to stay pretty close to the same winning formula of FO3 with a few innovations thrown in for good measure, which will put a lot of attention on how the developers deliver the latest iteration of the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (VATS).
Though actual gameplay doesn’t appear to feature in the trailer itself, there are a few clues about what’s on its way and perhaps the most significant has got to be the potential inclusion of playable dog character. With similarities with Riley from Call Of Duty: Ghosts, it looks like the main character will be heading out with an Alsatian at his side, but we’ll have to wait to see how involved he is in the actual gameplay. It could just be a similar situation to Fallout 3, which featured a canine called Dogmeat as a non playable companion character.
Another big tell is the pretense of the power armour suit in the main character’s garage, so we’re expecting this to be a key feature of the game. He also appears to have a Pip-Boy computerised wrist-watch, from which you’ll be able to access the menu to check on your stats, maps, data and items in your inventory for crafting and mission completion.
The open world setting has been widely confirmed as being Boston this time around and from the trailer it would appear that you’ll have everything from the city and suburbs to the vast surrounding countryside to make your way through. It also looks like the game might be set a little closer to the nuclear apocalypse than in previous years, but we’ll have to wait until E3 to know for sure. Let us know what you think of the the trailer in the comments below.
