Euros Childs is back with new album Summer Special and it’s an indie pop/folk mash-up that is as catchy as a fly in the general vicinity of Daniel-san’s chop sticks. Summer Special was released on CD earlier this month, but Childs has also put the entire album up online for download at www.euroschilds.com with the option to make a donation.
Opening track, Be Be High, is a 60s inspired pop hit that would put a smile on the collective faces of The Loves, Beatles, Monkeys and Beach Boys. The pop magic continues on That’s Better with a class clarinet solo finish and skiffle drums.
The pop tones lean on the first vague traces of folk on Summer Special with I’m Seeing Her Tonight. It’s a slow fill up, but it’s got a cool homage to Beatles harmonies in the final third. Headphone Mona is a relaxed wedge of Welsh blues-folk, before Clap A Chan kicks in with a Welsh language hand slapper for all the family.
Roogie Boogie is a slightly tongue in cheek cap doff to American boogie tracks and Around and Around is another catchy pop trip.
Things get a bit more serious on Painting Pictures Of Summer with tales of broken love. This feeds in well to the hopeful and heartfelt piano fuelled These Dreams of You with Euros Childs’ best folk vocals.
That Good Old Fashioned Feeling is an old school minor toe tapper, but it’s the culmination of the love lost section of the album. Things are still a bit slow on Skipping and Dancing, although both feature some nice interjections of violin.
Closing track, Good Feeling is the Euros Childs equivalent of Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. It’s a hopeful ditty of the potential of sunny days to inspire good feelings.
If you’re a lover of all things indie pop, a folkie or Welsh, Euros Childs’ Summer Special needs to be listened to, because it’s definitely one for you. With the donation option, it’s a music creation that’s available to all no matter what your finances, which is brilliant.
