Popularity for the game is having a renaissance with the success of Stranger Things, so with the Dungeons & Dragons movie release date this week here’s more on the age rating and runtime. We’ll take you through when it’s coming out in the UK and North America, along with the latest on the certificate, story, cast, how long the film is and trailer details.
Dungeons & Dragons movie UK and North America release date
The Dungeons & Dragons movie UK release date is set for March 31st, 2023, which is the same as when it’s coming out in North America. That puts it in a very good place to land just in time for the Easter holidays, so it’s definitely got timing on its side.

It’s the only big film out that weekend, but it’s surrounded by some absolute behemoths that could easily challenge the D&D movie for the number 1 spot in both the UK and America. It’ll have the remaining power of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which is out two weeks before it, as well as John Wick Chapter 4, which was released March 24th, and then the Super Mario Bros. Movie a week after Honor Among Thieves.
With the US and UK release date set for the end of March, we should then go on to get the DVD, Blu-ray and digital release in time for the summer holidays. The exact schedule will kind of depend on the success at the box office, but July is definitely a contender and you can read more about home media with the links at the bottom of the page.
Age rating certificate latest
The British Board of Film Classification has announce the official UK age rating for the Dungeons and Dragons movie with the release date this week, giving it a 12A certificate. It had already been given a PG-13 certificate in North America, which is usually a good indicator that it’s in line to be a 12 in the UK, so things went as expected.

There’s a lot of fantasy violence and threat in the trailer, but nothing too scary to push it up higher than a 12 age rating. Language and innuendo are another consideration, but for the most part it appears to be all about sword fights and dragon attacks.
AdvertisementAs the film is set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, there’s not much chance of seeing any gun fights, which can have an impact on the certificate. There will be magical abilities, but these look in line with the fantasy violence that we’ve seen in films like Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, so don’t appear to have affected things that much.
The only fantasy film to come out relatively recently with a 15 age rating was Natalie Portman parody Your Highness. That was way more over the top than Honor Among Thieves, so definitely not in the same ballpark at all.

Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves runtime
As with the age rating, the Dungeons & Dragons movie runtime has now been confirmed as we’re close to the release date. It clocks in a 2 hours and 14 minutes long, so it’s about average for similar big-budget action and adventure films.
Your Highness was under 2 hours long, but it’s a lot shorter than the more serious fantasy films like Lord of the Rings, which was nearly 3 hours long. The closest film in terms of how long Honor Among Thieves is was Warcraft, which had a 2 hours and 3 minutes runtime.
Cast
AdvertisementThe Dungeons and Dragons movie has got a chunky cast with Chris Pine (Wonder Woman), Michelle Rodriguez (Fast and the Furious), Rege-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Sophia Lillis (It) and Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingom) leading the fight on the side of good. They’ve then got Hugh Grant (Operation Fortune) and Daisy Head (Shadow & Bone) in the side of dastardly deeds and dragons, so it’s pretty tooled-up in the name department.
The trailers have had a mixed response, but with the actors in the cast there might be enough star power to still make this a contender at least for the Easter top spot. They’ve all had some pretty big box office smashes, and with the night of DnD behind it they could do it again with Honor Among Thieves.
Rodriguez stars as the barbarian warrior, Holga, Pine plays the cheeky bard, Edgin, Page is a Paladin named Xenk, acting as the stoic wisdom of the team, Smith is a wayward sorcerer called Simon and Lillis is Doric the druid. Daisy Head plays the red wizard, Sofina, and Hugh Grant is the rogue of the adventure, Forge, but we’re not convinced he’s going to be the lovable sort.

Story
The group of semi-miscreants start out on a quest for a relic, but when it lands in the hands of the wrong people all hell breaks looks. They’re then faced with an army of the un-dead and some seriously powerful dark magic, so they’re going to have their work cut out for them.
AdvertisementIf that isn’t enough, there’s a massive dragon who ate all of the pies trying to incinerate them with it’s pastry-fueled fiery breath and something that looks like a cross between an owl and a bear. If that isn’t bat droppings doolally there’s also a killer gelatinous cube on the loose and the red wizard sets a couple of dragon statue on them.
For anyone that’s new to the world of Dungeons & Dragons, you’ve got plenty of time to watch Stranger Things to get at least a little more context on how it works. If you know the Netflix series they you might be expecting a few more dark monsters for the band of thieves to face before the movie credits roll.
Trailer
Paramount pictures has put out three trailers for the Dungeons and Dragons movie and they all paint a similar story of fantasy action and light-hearted movie fun. If you’re looking for a film over Spring 2023 where you can just turn up, tune in and chill out with then it’s definitely in the running with Shazam! 2 and the Mario Movie.
The CGI and sets look impressive, but it’s gone big on the comedy front, which could put a few old school D&D board game fans off the movie. Even one of the dragons is a more comic than fearsome, but you can also see that there are still some very real threats for the group to face in their bid to save their world from total destruction.
It’s easy to watch the trailer and see why Honor Among Thieves picked up the 12 age rating (PG-13 in North America). It’s pretty inoffensive, but still has a lot of action and a little threat to up the ante. Plus there’s the brilliance of the owl bear to take into account.
