For fans of Dr Who all over the world, the residents of Cardiff are the lucky ones as they get to see the show filming in and around the city, as it’s been the base of the BBC sci-fi series for the last 10 year. However, with the recent announcement of the show’s upcoming world tour, Whovians from seven major cities around the globe will be getting a visit from the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, along with executive producer and lead writer Steven Moffat and co-star Jenna Coleman, giving them a chance to redress the balance a little.
The tour will inevitably be kicking off in the Welsh capital, starting with a series of exclusive events in Cardiff on the 7th August 2014, before heading out on the road for their next stop off in London on the 8th for more events and publicity appearances. From then on they’ll be calling in on Seoul (South Korea), Sydney (Australia), New York (US), and Mexico City (Mexico) before finishing up in carnival style in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) for the last leg of the tour on the 19th August 2014.
The 12 day world tour will build up to the premier of the first episode of Dr Who Series 8, giving fans a chance to get a little closer to Peter Capaldi before he gets back behind the Tardis in his new role. Talking to the BBC on the day of the announcement, he said, “It’s fantastic that so many people across the world love Doctor Who. After eight months solid filming deep in the world of monsters, Jenna and I are thrilled to be heading for the Planet of Fans.”
Each of the stops on the tour will feature a variety of media events and fan interaction opportunities to build excitement for the beginning of a new era for the show with the dawning of the twelfth Doctor Who. It will build on the growing international interest in the legendary series, which culminated last year in the global success of the 50th Anniversary which saw the special episode The Day Of The Doctor going out simultaneously to 98 countries and in more than 1,500 cinemas worldwide.
A finalised list of dates and activities hasn’t yet been released for the world tour, but we’ve been reassured that it’ll be on its way soon, so watch this space and share this page below to keep up with the latest details. One thing we do know for sure is that Steven Moffat won’t be able to make all of the stops, due to production commitments, but again a full list with the dates he’ll be on will be released shortly.
With the first episode of series 8 also planned for August 2014, it’s one of the first times we’ve ever seen a media build up quite so significant globally for a British TV show premier, sounding more like a big movie release. However, with the massive worldwide fan following, we’re predicting a very warm welcome wherever the new Tardis team touch down.
The announcement of the world tour comes on the back of a lot of buzz about the guest star appearances that will be coming to the new series of Who this Autumn. We’ve already confirmed Frank Skinner, Ben Miller, Hermione Norris, Ellis George, Tony Osoba, Phil Nice, Tom Riley and Keeley Hawes, but you can visit our Dr Who news and reviews page for all the latest details on the show.
