The burgeoning cult of Cults is back on the music scene this autumn as the New York duo of Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion get set for their second album release, Static. Following on from their 2011 self titled debut album, they’ve finally got it together for long enough in the studio to create the crackling wavelengths of their new material.
Set for release on the 16th October 2013 through Columbia Records, their second album is set to build on the band’s fifties and sixties modernisation strategy as they continue to set their sights on new wave garage pop bliss. It’ll be out on CD and digital download with eleven tracks of indie pop styling with some subtle mixing finesse and interwoven guitars with synth layers.
To wet your magical musical whistle, pique your oracular interest and generally set up the full release of Static later this month for a smash aimed at the general vacinity of “out of the ball park”, Cults has put out a new super cool video to accompany their recently released single, High Road. It’s a bit like the music video love child of White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army and Radiohead’s Karma Police.
Directed by Hiro Murai (Earl Sweatshirt, St. Vincent, The Shins) the video is a monochrome masterpiece as the camera zooms in through the fabric of each shot. With pop art cool that seems to take inspiration from the likes of Damian Hirst in a kaleidoscopic sort of way, it’s the kind of video you’d watch as much for the visuals as the music.
The single itself opens out with a really strong series of deep guitar notes and a slinky bass line. The vocals have a downplayed hypnotic haze, especially in the chorus, with a little Motown in the verse. It’s also got a more modern minimal approach to its construction and a darker breakdown instrumental before the chorus, that works well to give the track depth.
Static is produced by Cults with the help of Shane Stoneback, who has previously worked with Sleigh Bells and Vampire Weekend, and Ben Allen whose notable credits include Animal Collective and Washed Out.
