On the eve of the Oscars, another less illustrious awards ceremony is hotting up with the 2020 Rassie nominations, which deride the worst of the movie industry. With poor reviews and not the best reception from cinema goers, the Cats movie was always going to be in the mix for Golden Raspberry award nods, but the real surprise is the inclusion of Joker, which had the exact opposite release success to Cats.
The joke’s on Joker
It’s currently in the running for some big Academy Awards with a tally of 11 categories in the 2020 Oscars nominations and Joaquin Phoenix has already won best actor for his role as the Joker at this year’s BAFTAs, so it might seem bizarre to see it in the running for a Razzy that it might just win. However, when you look into the details of the nomination it kind of starts to make sense.
It’s actually been nominated for a brand new category that appears to have been created just to give the ceremony a way of including one of the biggest hot topic movies of the awards season. The new category is The Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property, which has got made for Joker written all over it. The other films in the running are Dragged Across Concrete, The Haunting of Sharon Tate, Hellboy and Rambo: Last Blood, so it’s definitely possible Joker will miss out on the not so coveted award.

Cats faces kitty litter storm of Golden Raspberry nominations
Things are much less convoluted for the Cats movie, with eight nominations in total at the 2020 Golden Raspberry Awards. It’s up for the big stinker, Worst Picture, alongside The Fanatic, The Haunting of Sharon Tate, A Madea Family Funeral and Rambo: Last Blood. Tom Cooper is also in the frame for Worst Director, as is James Corden for Worst Supporting Actor and both Judi Dench and Rebel Wilson for Worst Supporting Actress.
The weirdest nomination it’s up for is Worst Screen Combo, which sounds normal on the face of things until you find out that the combo in question is Jason Derulo and his CGI post neuter bulge. In fact, the movie has two nominations in that category with the second going to “any two half-feline/half-human hairballs”, so clearly on screen chemistry wasn’t its sharpest claw.
With so much negative press and big star talent, the Cats movie is easily the big contender for all of the nominations it’s up for. The Ceremony will take place after the 2020 Oscars, but with little crossover with the slightly convoluted Joker inclusion, the two don’t really impact each other very much.
