Marvel Comics has been leading the way in terms of comic book revival big screen releases and the 2014 release date of Captain America: The Winter soldier (AKA Captain America 2) is one of the next set of films they’ve got in the pipeline. Following up on 2011’s Captain America and last year’s The Avengers, Chris Evans gets back into the role of Steve Rogers, Captain America, as he continue to come to terms with his modern day, high tech existence.
This time around he’s got to face a mysterious, deadly enemy terrorising Washington DC. There’s not much more than that at the moment in terms of the plot as Marvel are playing things close to their chest, but we do know that the film will feature Captain America’s WWII sidekick, James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, the Winter Soldier (played by Sebastian Stan once again). However, the movie art released by Marvel that confirms this has Captain America and the Winter Soldier battling it out as Bucky returns as the brainwashed masked killer.
Though the ultimate enemy behind it all is yet to be revealed officially, the fact that Crossbones (played by Frank Grillo) is involved in the fray had got to point towards the possibility of the Red Skull being at the centre of it all once again as Crossbones was one of his henchmen in the comic book series.
Scarlett Johansson will also star in the film, continuing the role of Natasha Romanoff, The Black Widow, which she did so well in Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. Samuel L. Jackson will also be reprising his role as Nick Fury, and Robert Redford has been confirmed to star in the film as a senior member of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Other characters to look forward to include bird-man, Falcon (played by Anthonie Mackie), who can fly and talk to the boids and French martial arts expert mercenary, Georges Batroc (played by UFC champ, Georges St. Pierre), who has incredible leaping powers to impress the ladies with.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is due for release on the 4th April 2014, so there’s just under a year’s worth of teaser trailer releases and rumours to surface. The biggest of which has got to be whether or not the Red Skull will return, bringing Hugo Weaving back from the past.
