News has recently dropped that Hollywood legend Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Batman Begins) has joined the cast of the highly anticipated new British sitcom Porters, which is due to be aired on Dave later this year. With Blade Runner 2049 out later this year, the casting should help to give the show a strong boost ahead of its air date later in 2017.
This will be Hauer’s first time working on a British comedy series and if you’re too young to remember, you can check out his “tears in rain” monologue from Blade Runner below. His character in the show is described to be a porter and former golfing prodigy who teaches the main character Simon Porter (Ed Easton) about all walks of life, including most importantly, love.
The fact that Hauer’s character used to be a golfing prodigy, who could have been earning millions as a professional to then be working as a porter makes it seem like he’s going to have a bitter look on the world, which could create some hilarious anecdotes for us.
Rutger Hauer’s “tears in rain” monologue from Blade Runner:
The story revolves around Simon Porter (Ed Easton) who dreams of passing his medical exams and eventually becoming a Doctor. His dreams start out with him working as a porter at the hospital, trying to work as hard as he can to prove himself and doing his best not to kill any patients in the process.
Porters stars Ed Easton (We the Jury) as our main character Simon Porter. As previously mentioned Rutger Hauer is on board to play Ed’s sort of mentor in the show. Susan Wokoma (Chewing Gum, Crazyhead) is also in the cast as an incredulous “Queen of the Porters”, as she’s going to refer to herself as. Finally, Claudia Jessie (Line of Duty, Doctors) is also a supporting character in the show as the naive nurse Lucy.
This new TV show from writer Dan Sefton (Delicious) has great potential to be a truly hilarious British sitcom. Delivering Rutger Hauer to the cast shows us that the script for this series must be good enough to entice an actor with that much pedigree. Hauer was a main character in Blade Runner, so let’s hope his comedic timing is as good as his fighting against Harrison Ford. Dan Sefton was even awestruck to have Hauer join the cast after he said:
“I’m astonished and honoured that a genuine movie legend has agreed to take part in a sitcom written by an idiot. None of us are worthy, especially me. It’s quite surreal but utterly amazing to go from watching someone on screen as a kid, to chatting about your script with them in Costa Coffee.”
Dave and Dan Sefton confirmed that filming was underway for Porters on the 1st May on Twitter:
The thought of seeing Rutger Hauer in your local Costa is an exciting and also terrifying thought. The man is a great actor but he has played some chilling roles in the past, The Hitcher just to name one film, which still haunts the minds of many today.
