Black leather skirts make a comeback

The resurgence of black leather skirts has sort of come out of nowhere this autumn and winter, and for anyone not already up on the fashion trend, it’s time to blow the bank on a cooler than cool style. If you’re not that keen on spending big, but still want to get in on the look there are more than a few faux leather skirts out there, but if you’re looking for the real deal here are a few good options to consider.

GAP black leather skirt

We love this black leather skirt from GAP, not just because it’s a whole lot of surprise edge from the US brand, but because it’s brilliantly put together, has very cool zip pockets and it’s short enough to push the buttons without being cheap. It’s got a relatively narrow a-line design, so it’s easy to pair up with a wide range of different tops and blouses and it’s not so chunky as to make it awkward to wear.

Ryley black leather pencil skirt

The Ryley pencil skirt design above from All Saints is also pretty impressive and it’s a great example of the potential for a black leather skirt to go from office smart to gig casual with relative ease. It’s similar to the GAP skirt above, but with more length and narrower pencil skirt lines, making it a good option to dress up and down.

Whistles black leather skirt

It’s another a-line entry from Whisles, available at ASOS, but with more more simplicity. It may not have a great deal in the way of embelishments, apart from the occasional leather panels, but what it lacks in drama it makes if for in solid lines and slinky silhouettes. It’s maybe a little too short for workwear, but it works well for casual to night out wear and everything in between.

Mango black leather skirt

If you are looking for the kind of leather skirt that works well in the office, this pencil design from Mango, available from ASOS, has got a lot of potential. It finishes just above the knee and has a classic tapering line, so it’s got the potential to look pretty smart. We’re not entirely convinced that you need to wear it quite as high above the waist as the model above, but other than that it’s a good look.

Zara black leather skirt

The braided belt on the skirt above from Zara makes for a pretty cool addition to the classic little black skirt. It’s fairly short, without necessarily being mini and it’s been well darted to create a flowing contour to the hips.

Marks and Spencer black leather skirt

We can’t help but like the quilt stitch-work on the skirt above from Marks and Spencer, but it does give it a slightly ridged and wide line at times, so you’ll probably need to choose wisely in terms of what to wear with it. Chunky knitwear and loose tops are probably the best options, but anything too figure hugging up top will accentuate the broad line of the skirt, so should be avoided.

French Connection black leather skirt

The French Connection black leather mini skirt above if probably the most casual and simple design out the seven that we’ve featured, but that also makes it one of the more fun options on the high street. Wear it with simple tops and cool heels and you’ll look pretty stylish.
