Harley Quinn hit back hard with the arrival of the Birds Of Prey trailer 2 and it looks like DC Films and Warner Bros have cranked things up a notch as we get a little closer to the release date. There’s more action, more mini reveals and a little more on the plot to give us a better idea of how everything is going to string together in the film.
The biggest reveal is the shots of Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis in his Black Mask form, which looks pretty dark. We’d seen him as the psychopath mob boss in the previous video, but that didn’t really give comic book fans what we were hoping for. The good news is that the Trainspotting and Star Wars star doesn’t disappoint in the more sinister incarnation of his character.
There are also two big talking points that provide more details on the story setup. Firstly, there’s the sequence showing Cassandra Cain half-inching a diamond from Sionis’ right hand man, Victor Zsasz’ pocket. This appears to be the reason that she becomes target numero uno for the man in the black mask and his gang of thugs, kick starting the formation of the Birds of Prey.
The second big story point is the sections of trailer 2 that show Harley Quinn well and truly parting ways with the Joker and making it clear that it was a mutual separation with some big noise fireworks thrown in for good measure. It then cuts to a Bridget Jones style cheese wizz moment where she’s clearly taking the breakup badly, but it doesn’t take long for her to get distracted with the battle against Black Mask to protect Cassandra.
We also get to see Harley’s hyena in action for the first time, which suits the mother hen of the Birds down to the ground. It doesn’t do any attack dog moves, instead, you just see it in the bath getting a bit of a wash down, but there are bound to be some “hyena offs baddy” moments to look forward to.
The rest of the Birds Of Prey cast feature well in the 2nd trailer, with the Birds themselves looking cooler than they did in the 1st trailer. Both Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell get more of a chance show what they can do as Huntress and Black Canary, and it’s a similar story for Ella Jay Basco.
However, Rosie Perez doesn’t feature too much, but hopefully that just means that she’s going to be one of the secret weapons for the film release.
If you didn’t pick up on the story from the trailer itself below, the plot starts out with Harley Quinn just after her explosive breakup with long-term beau, the Joker. She manages to find new purpose in protecting the young Cassandra Cain from the fury of Roman Sionis and finds herself with a new gang of unconventional gal pals to boot. Obviously, a hyper intelligent and sarcastic hyena comes in handy too, so she definitely manages to pick herself up and dust herself off after the whole Mr J business.
Birds Of Prey has been confirmed for a UK release date of the 7th February 2020, so trailer 2 has arrived just in time to help build the hype for the film. It comes with a lot of hope for a decent anti-hero flick and while it doesn’t stand much chance of coming close to Joker, it looks like a lot of fun. It also looks like the talk about it being R rated is bang on with a lot of more intense violence than was shown in the first trailer.
