Margot Robbie looks about as Harley Quinn as you could get, which is one of the big reasons why the Birds Of Prey poster look so cool. Whether the film itself goes on to be as impressive as the Australian actress is in the lead role, the artwork surrounding the film will stand out on its own, which isn’t an easy thing to achieve in the movie world.
The latest batch of posters combine a comic book style with just enough realism and a collage pop art design that is clearly inspired by the works of Eduardo Paolozzi, Peter Blake and Richard Hamilton. They’re more playful and comic than political, so you won’t need an art degree to appreciate them, but it is impressive that they’ve used that style for the posters.
AdvertisementAs you’d expect, the one for Harley Quinn is the coolest, featuring Robbie in the Birds Of Prey lead role, continuing her efforts as the legendary DC Comics character, which was the only good thing to come out Suicide Squad. She’s got her attack hammer in tow, her hyena snarling at her feet and a clutch of lipstick-soaked hand grenades ready for action, so clearly she’ll bee getting mean a couple of times in the film when the release date rolls around in February 2020.
There are a few other titbits in the poster to help showcase the character ahead of the films debut with a couple of diamonds as the girl’s best friends down low, what looks like two cheeseburger subs, a sofa sinking into the sea and a single roller skate flying with heavenly wings. However, we’re most intrigued by the Peter Pointer decapitated hand next to Quinn’s left elbow and the mysterious construction with the writing next to it.
AdvertisementThe other Birds Of Prey posters feature the rest of the main characters in the film. We’re not as impressed with the Victor Zsasz effort. The character is played by Chris Messina and if we’re being honest it looks like the issue might be with the film more than the poster, with the costume, hair and makeup being poor in comparison to the comic book super villain design.
However, Ewan McGregor looks smart as Roman Sionis, AKA Black Mask, the film’s main baddy, and then the rest of the Birds’ posters continue the epic efforts of Harley Quinn’s. Mary Elizabeth Winstead looks strong as Huntress, although there isn’t much in the way of background detail in the poster, and it’s a similar story for Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary Poster. Hopefully, there will be more character depth in the film release itself. Rosie Perez looks nails as knuckle-duster-totting cop Renee Montoya, and then there’s also a nice poster of all of the main Birds Of Prey with their young charge Cassandra Cain, played by Ella Jay Basco. She’s got her own poster too with the character taking a fairly central role in the film as the fulcrum for the events that take place.
AdvertisementEssentially, the premise is that she gets a bounty out on her head by megalomaniac crime Lord Sionis and somehow manages to fall in in with Harley and the rest of the Birds. It’s then up to them to keep her safe from harm while also dealing with their own personal issues along the way.
For us, the two coolest posters are the one for Harley at the top of the page, which would look cool anywhere, and the one featuring all of the Birds, who must band together to take on the night of Gotham’s grim underbelly. Hopefully, the film itself lives up to the potential of the posters and puts the disappointment of Suicide Squad behind DC once and for all.
